Last Friday I attended my nephew’s high school homecoming football game and it was so exciting for the community as a whole. Only in TX will you see 20,000 to 30,000 attending a football game which is where they came up with Friday Night Lights. We watched the game in the light drizzle, and saw the students crown their homecoming king who happens to have Cerebral Palsy. Then watching my nephew and the high school band and drill team do the half time show. One of the things I had to teach my mom about was something called a homecoming mum.
The homecoming mum was new to me as I am not a native Texan and instead I am a transplant. Reuters does a pretty good job at explaining the homecoming mum and I seek to figure out what it is as well. Think of a corsage but overdone Texas style. They were typically flower corsages that boys gave to girls at homecoming. It has since morphed into a homecoming tradition of over the top styles with silk flowers, plastic trinkets, teddy bears and more. They can easily cost $100 and rather than just pin them to your dress, they are worn around the neck. Boys also wear homecoming mums in arm bands around their upper arms.
In keeping with homecoming mum tradition, I found a site that sells roses made of sports balls called sports roses. Made out of real sports balls, these roses are very unique and individual and they are a great addition to not just a homecoming mum but bouquets of all types. With selections from football, baseball, softball and now volleyball you can get your sweetheart a unique rose for homecoming. They even come corsage style so you can stick it into the homecoming mum.
With my link for Dallas Single Mom readers, you can get yourself a free sports rose of your choice ($14.95 value) on your first online purchase of $35.00. Get this deal here!
Sports Roses created some tips for making the homecoming dance a spectacular event at you or your child’s school. Here are their tips below:
1. Make homecoming fun with a little reality TV flare. Popular TV shows like the Bachelor and Bachelorette involve the main contestants giving roses to the guys or girls they want to keep dating. Why don’t you do something similar at your homecoming dance? Give Sports Roses to homecoming royalty, or to recognize the accomplishments of distinguished alumni who come back for homecoming.
2. Offer Sports Roses as door prizes. Not everyone gets to be homecoming king or queen and not everyone will get recognized for all their talents. But that does not mean they can’t receive a great gift. Give Sports Roses as door prizes for couples who attend homecoming.
3. Host a pre-homecoming poetry slam. Who said homecoming had to be only for jocks? Not us. After the big game, host a poetry slam where students and teachers can share their talents with the entire community. Give Sports Roses to the participants. It’s a fun way to get everyone involved.
4. Use Sports Roses as a fundraiser for homecoming or for charity. Hosting homecoming requires money. Consider selling Sports Roses as a fundraiser and use part of the money for the dance or for a worthy charity. You can learn more about our unique fundraising packages here.
