At the beginning of this year, one of my resolutions this year was to engage with my community and spend more time getting to know my neighbors. With three school age kids, it is easy to get swept into the routine of sports, homework, work and family time without much engagement with those that live close to us, but that are not part of that every day cycle.
Enter National Night Out.
National Night Out is national initiative designed to bring neighbors together, help them connect the dots and spur those relationships that used to be a given thing a leg up. The goal is to bring people out of their houses, into the street and cooking, chatting, eating, socializing and engaging together for the good of the community. When this opportunity to partner with Red Baron and Sam’s Club rolled around, I knew exactly what I would use it for — to make something people-friendly that I was sure would be eaten. Mini pizzas!
My kids already loved Red Baron Pizza, but when the NextDoor shout out said “Bring your Pits and Come BBQ and Get to Know your Neighbors.” I delighted. Game on! I had seen on BBQ with Bobby Flay, his version of BBQ Pizza, which looked wonderful… This was so much easier!
The Day of NNO we drove by my local Sam’s. I love it in there. It’s easy to shop. I always find something new that I haven’t tried yet. We simply picked up a couple boxes of frozen pizza, a few extras sides and family pleasing dishes and disposables so that no one would end up washing dishes after the block party. We could see the clouds were gathering, but we held out hope for the best.
The excitement around National Night Out was building as set up the canopy, lit the pits and placed foldable chairs and woven rugs right in the street in front of the house. Since it was after school, we got see our friends, and made new friends as the neighbors came by welcomed by the scent of a hot fire, sizzling meat and soft pop music playing in the background.
Fast forward a bit and it was awesome! The rain seemed to be holding off, and the kids played happily… most of the time :). The food was a hit! Chilli dogs and smoked sausages are so simple. And running with the idea of cooking the pizzas on the BBQ pits was a winner. It is a breeze, just take them out of the packages, set right on the rack and close the lid. In a few minutes they are bubbly with just a touch of smoke flavor. I thought just the kids would grab them, but melty cheese and crispy crust made them a neighbors favorite! Go Pizza!
Then the rains rolled in with a vengeance and the wind seemed to be blowing sideways. Everyone got a good laugh as we bundled all the kids into the houses and packed up the canopies, pits , leftovers and a host of good memories.
