I attended a complimentary event with DFW Bloggers at Fat Daddy’s in Mansfield as part of their media guests.
What is a protocol? A protocol is an official procedure or system of rules governing affairs of state or diplomatic occasions. Summer Patio Protocol in Dallas-Fort Worth is a must as we strive to see and be seen. Patios are for diplomatic affairs of social fun and Fat Daddy’s new patio has inspired me to put my list of patio must haves down on paper and out to my readers. If you aren’t aware of it yet, the summer weather in North Texas gets hot and the heat becomes the stuff of legend. That is why I put my foot down and decided that certain summer patio protocols (unofficially Dallas Single Mom’s must haves for patio partying) must be in place for Dallas-Fort Worth area restaurants and bar and grills. The ultimate goal here is for everyone to have a good time. Fat Daddy’s is a bar, restaurant and live music spot over in Mansfield, TX just 38 minutes south of DFW Airport. They have just expanded their patio and a lucky bunch of us from DFWBloggers.com got to experience their patio for a special media event. It’s a beautiful facility with close to 16,000 square footage of space and able to accommodate 945 people. The décor is cool as you walk in your are greeted to a large rotating platform with a hot rod from House of Hot Rods (down the street) that changes out every month. On the ceiling is a dragster along with large mirrors and art. They just changed out the carpet so it’s all new and they have 4 limestone fireplaces. The dance floor really catches the eye as I had my boots on that night. The Texas themed décor also goes well in the party room that provides a much more private experience. The main attraction for us was the brand new patio at their Frankie’s patio and bar. What better way to begin talking about the ultimate in patio party fun than during the mother of all summer parties – 4th of July Weekend.
Summer Patio Protocols at Fat Daddy’s
To kick off this list of patio party must haves, we go back to basics and understand the “Whys?” of Fat Daddy’s. So why expand the patio in the first place? According to their manager, the current patio that they had included an outside bar but plain and simple it was HOT! I just said in the first paragraph that it gets hot in Texas. The brand new patio opened just in time for 4th of July Weekend and DFW Bloggers got a sneak peek of it and it inspired this list of patio party protocols.
Patio Party Protocol #1 – Thou Shalt have a patio that can withstand the weather’s elements
I don’t care what a restaurant has to do to make it possible but a patio should be a pretty pleasant experience for the guest offering a lot of the same food and drink as inside the establishment with the exception that one shall wear sunglasses while eating or drinking on the patio. If I burn my butt sitting down in your metal chair that has been sitting in the Texas heat all day this is a pretty clear indication that you have broken protocol #1. Here’s what I like about the patio at Fat Daddy’s. Not only did they extend the already existing patio area (which becomes like a half patio/half inside experience but they created an additional raised patio further extending into the parking lot. This raised patio comes equipped with garage doors that can be raised or lowered in the colder, winter months as well as still able to seat people in case of rain, swarms of locusts or sweltering heat. The patio also has raised vaulted ceilings with woodwork lacing throughout the ceiling. In between the crisscross of wood beams are large custom ceiling fans to effectively circulate air.
Patio Party Protocol #2 – Thou Shalt have large televisions on thy patio
Fat Daddy’s has two 80 inch televisions that adorn each side of their new patio with more televisions on in the inner patio as well. In all they have 30 HD televisions. This phenomena of televisions in bars is a must have feature at most sports bars in America. Per the manager, Fat Daddy’s provides the expert and beginner sports loving enthusiast with a pleasant atmosphere on the patio including two huge televisions and possibly many more including televisions inside the restaurant itself. At their heart they are your local neighborhood sports bar with the added extra excitement of being an entertainment destination. They are a place where sports draft nuts come to draft their teams with their tablets, laptops and smartphones. Inquire about Wi-Fi because they do have it but not sure yet if it’s free or not. What they also have is as reported on their website, the largest projection screen in South DFW. 165” foot for major sporting events. This should be its own patio party protocol but because they are based in DFW – they will be showing all major Dallas Sports Teams on the televisions.
Patio Party Protocol #3 – Thou Shalt have comfy furniture that allows one to be seen
Fat Daddy’s patio has pub style seating and tables in the center part of the patio and at either end are comfy loveseats and coffee tables. Gather with your group of friends and family to converse in a closer environment with drinks from the bar. The pub style chairs makes it possible to hang out close to the patio wall in the front and stare into the patio parking lot. They recently started Long Horn Harley Davidson bike nights every Thursday night at Fat Daddy’s. With drink specials and entertainment bring your bike and watch it from the patio in comfy pub chairs.
Patio Party Protocol #4 – Thou Shalt have easy access to fully stocked bar
Fat Daddy’s serves up many of your favorite beers on bottle and on draft. The establishment comes equipped with two bars. One bar is on the inner patio making navigation to your favorite libations easy instead of having to go to the main bar inside the restaurant. Their signature drinks that are on the menu are probably what should make them famous. I was unaware of what they had. With names like Not Yo Momma’s Margarita (Cuervo Silver, triple sec, margarita mix, topped with DeKuyper razzmatazz and fresh fruit), Pink Cadillac (Smirnoff pineapple and vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, grenadine and a splash of sprite) to the brunch only Orange Cream Sorbet Mimosa (Homemade Orange Cream Sorbet topped with champagne and garnished with a fresh strawberry) anything you try of their signature concoctions is a toast to the Patio party Gods and Goddesses.
Patio Party Protocol #5 – Thou Shalt have access to great entertainment
Some places in DFW have small patios that are completely closed off from any and all entertainment leaving you out of the action. Fat Daddy’s has a lot of special events such as WPT Poker tournaments every Monday night, Longhorn Harley Davidson Nights every Thursday night, Live Band Karaoke every Wednesday and many other bands that play top 40, 80’s and more throughout the week. The patio at Fat Daddy’s also has acoustic Sundays if you want to listen to live music and still be able to talk with your party. While the major events happen on the large stage inside (Live Band Karaoke is on the smaller stage by the pool tables) the patio never makes you feel like you are cutoff from the rest of the establishment. You can still see the entertainment inside.
Patio Party Protocol #6 – Thou shalt have some pretty awesome grindage (food)
Fat Daddy’s has an extensive menu including brunch items that include: Sriracha chicken and waffles, migas, chicken fried steak and eggs and an array of brunch only drinks. For lunch you can order sandwiches, salads and burgers. For dinner you can find your regular bar food but with a kick or a twist here and there. Order the favorite app, the Cadillac Nachos covered in a secret recipe chili and shiner bock cheese. Enjoy your favorite grilled items as well as specialty pizzas. All items on the menu can also be had on the patio.
Over the years I have enjoyed quite a few patios in Dallas-Fort Worth and one of the things that stands out to me at Fat Daddy’s is how much work they put into creating such a nice patio. There have been restaurants in Fort Worth (most notably the W. 7th Street area) that have made their marks on open patios that provide real comfort. I feel that Fat Daddy’s went beyond that in many ways and their new patio provides a very pleasant experience for guests. They didn’t just put out some plastic lawn chairs where the wait staff forgets about you, they really took pride in it and it definitely shows in the details.
Considering the next live music venue closest to Fat Daddy’s is all the way in Arlington, this would be a must visit whether you live in the area or you are taking a short day trip. Rumor has it that they will be having their large Halloween bash this year including prizes for best costume, sexiest costume and most creative. They will welcome as the entertainment, none other than Vanilla Ice and the Coors Light Ice Bar (Literally a bar made of ice). You probably heard it here first and I know its happening because the manager said they just signed the contract. I urge you not to wait until Halloween, check out their new patio now and let me know what you think.
Also, stay tuned for updates because I will be hosting a giveaway with some cool prizes from Fat Daddy’s and other participating DFW area businesses including free tire rotation, day spa service and more. The giveaway will launch Wednesday so keep your eyes peeled on the blog or follow Dallas Single Mom on Facebook for updates. Find out more about Fat Daddy’s at their website, fatdaddyslive.com.
