I’m in the midst of reading Dan Brown’s Inferno and without giving too much of the book away (I just started reading it, I’m on chapter 9), the main antagonist in the book represents himself as Shade and wears a beak like mask. Per the protagonist in the story, the famous Robert Langdon, these long masks were originally worn by doctors in medieval times during the “Black Plague” years of the 13 to 1400’s in order to keep the air born pathogens away from their nostrils. The masks are now normally worn in theater or at Carnivales. It’s such a freaky looking mask but I think it would make a great Halloween costume idea.
I got to meet Josh Todd of BuckCherry and their latest video called Nothing Left But Tears, and it shows Todd in one of those masks. It’s a cool video which is set around a table that mimics the Mad Hatter’s table from Alice in Wonderland.
While perusing through eBay, I found some fantastic beak masks with many adornments such as feathers and beads. Obviously a lot of care went into crafting some of these but I love how they are displayed.
The detail on these particular masks make for a very unique costume and I love costume ideas based upon a time period in history or something that pays homage to a time period in history. Even these masks can pay an homage to a book, movie, film or broadway production that can resonate with people familiar with those productions.
