There are many pleasures in this world, and one of my favorites is settling into a good book with a nice glass of wine or warm cup of coffee. I tend to read almost anything I can get my hands on, but a good murder mystery, a spine-tingly legal thriller and a great romance have always been favorites of mine. I am also known to have a paperback, squeezed in beside my Kindle and all of my handbag must-carry treasures in my Flat Stanley bags .
I stumbled upon classic Avon Romances after years of Sweet Valley High, Cheerleaders, Jude Deveraux’s McTaggerts and Miranda Jarrett’s sailing Sparhawks family saga. They were delightful and so much fun to read that I never left the genre. Perfectly escape worthy tales with realistic heroines that are smart, funny and resourceful teamed with stories that end with a sigh and a guaranteed happily ever after. So it is no surprise that I adore Tessa Dare‘s style.
She is a master at creating rich scenes that are absorbing and modern, but still right for the time of the tale. She allows you to ride the wave of emotions, meet new friends and come back to the “and they lived and loved happily ever after”. I love that she utilizes bright, engaging heroines and equally hunky heroes that are more than simply eye candy. Her latest offering kept me up late on night during our last storm and happily refilling my mug to read just one more chapter.
Meet Emma Gladstone and the Duke of Ashbury. He needs a wife…. someone to become a Duchess, in fact. And she is a seamstress that needs some cash, after being stiffed by his former bride-to-be. When she arrives at his home, she has no idea what is she in for, but apparently neither is he. They both need someone love… they just don’t know it yet.
I loved the dynamic between the two and watching their love grow, the trust develop and how each character in turn learned the value of self-worth, mutual affection, the power of attention and how to move forward with life and let yourself be happy.
It’s a good story and a great start to the Girl Meets Duke Series. I can’t wait for Book 2.
