Mediterranean food is one of the healthiest diets you can find in the world. Now more available than ever, such food in this category can be found at your local grocery store and restaurants around town. I stopped by Afrah Mediterranean Food in Richardson off Hwy 75 and Belt Line for a menu sampling and learned why this food is guilt-free and serves as a perfect meal for the whole family.
Research shows you can live a longer and healthier life with food from the Mediterranean diet. The overall diet is packed with fruits, veggies, healthy oils and low in sodium. No wonder it can lower your risk of cancer and lead to a better cardiovascular health.
Afrah, owned by a local family who grew up in Lebanon, prepares its food fresh every day and makes many of its meals and desserts in house. Many recipes come from the owners’ mother, which have delighted guests for years at this restaurant. From fresh hot bread to its meats and sauces, much of the food is prepared by the staff each morning and throughout the day.
Start off your meal with one (or more!) of the housemade appetizers. The hummus is incredibly popular here, as are other traditional Mediterranean dips including Baba Ghanoush (eggplant and olive oil) and Labneh (plain yogurt and olive oil).
The grape leaves are also a personal favorite of mine. Wrapped in an eatable leaf, you have rice, diced tomatoes, chopped onions and parsley cooked in lemon juice.
If you are visiting the restaurant and with a family of 4 or more, I recommend ordering the Afrah Sampler. This will surely feed everyone in the group and won’t leave anyone hungry!
The sampler comes with loaded with chicken and beef kabobs, or you can order lamb and other meat options. Additionally choose four sides, such as hummus, rice and more!
Additional single-serve meals include a Meat Pie (a Mediterranean pizza on a thin crust – several variations available with and without meat), classic Mediterranean sandwiches with pita bread, large salads (Greek, Fattoush and more) and even burgers and chicken fingers for the younger kids who may be picky eaters.
Don’t miss out on dessert, either! The bakery at the front of the store whips up a variety of fresh sweets, such as cookies, gelato and the ever-popular Baklava.
