For the past year I have been saving a lot of money on my grocery bills and it has been very noticeable to see the savings add up for me. As a single mom, I try to budget and pinch pennies as much as I can. Many of my money savings tips help me balance my household budget from everything to eating out, auto maintenance, filling up on gas, school supplies, savings and retirement to managing bills and utilities. The battle for budgeting your grocery bill along with your car’s fuel bill is easy when you shop at Tom Thumb and take advantage of their newly expanded Gas Reward program. Now the savings on your grocery bills can really add up when you also save on pumping gas in your car.
In a recent interview with CBS news, I talked about my situation with regards to falling food prices. It’s also apparent at Tom Thumb. If you haven’t kept track of your grocery expenses, using Tom Thumb’s app helps you keep track of your grocery bills and what you spend. That spending then turns into points which can be applied to Gas Rewards at Tom Thumb and Albertson’s gas stations along with participating Chevron and Texaco stations. Existing Tom Thumb Reward Card members can begin earning and redeeming points using their Reward Card or phone number. Shoppers can also enroll in the Gas Rewards program by downloading the Tom Thumb or Albertsons app, available for iOS™ and Android® devices. You can also head to TomThumb.com or Albertsons.com/rewards to sign up. It really is a win-win when managing your budget and getting ready for the upcoming holidays.
How does the program work?
Once you sign up, Shoppers will earn points and redeem up to 20 cents per gallon in Gas Rewards at participating Chevron and Texaco locations or up to $1 per gallon at Tom Thumb and Albertsons gas stations. You will see the points at the bottom of your receipt. When you check your rewards card account either online or in the app, you can also see your balance there.
What’s the best way to earn points?
Just shop for what you need at Tom Thumb or Albertsons. Whether you are shopping in store or using Tom Thumb Grocery Delivery, you can always be assured you are getting great deals and also earning valuable points for gas discounts on participating items.
Here are a few of my tips on how best to maximize your savings:
Take an Inventory
You don’t know where to start if you don’t know what you already have. A few times a year I take an inventory of all the food items that are currently in stock in my house. I check for expiration dates, I rearrange shelves, rotate canned goods and throw out what I don’t need. For some items that I will use for upcoming holiday events I include that with my recipe files and ingredient lists. In this way I am not overbuying or under buying items. I catalog everything on hand. You can do this a few times a year or once a month to ensure you are not wasting money on groceries you don’t need.
Make a List
The key to grocery store savings is making a list. I can’t tell you how often I overspend when I impulse shop. To maximize the savings and effectiveness of my list I meal prep and plan for the week to minimize trips to the store. I can also review my previous purchases online or in the app. This helps me determine how I am spending money on my groceries and if I have to make any changes. The inventory also lets me know what my family’s preferences are. This was especially important when we began eating healthier or when the babies and toddlers began to grow up and no longer needed baby food.
Rewards and Discounts
Join the Tom Thumb Rewards program and enter in your email address to get notified about sales and coupons. On the Tom Thumb or Albertsons app you can also turn on notifications. In your email you can create a filter so that all the Tom Thumb emails can be placed in a folder in your email account. Once in the app you can create a shopping list there or write one by hand. That way you can mark things off the list when you get them.
Use coupons from circulars and your email. You may be able to stack coupons for even bigger savings. I keep envelopes in my purse by which the coupons I will use for that shopping trip based on my list are stored in that envelope or via the app. The savings really add up.
Buying Gift Cards
What I love about the Tom Thumb app is that it will show you the specials on Gift Cards. Many gift cards offer you double or more points in Gas Rewards so you can earn them faster. Purchase gift cards for the holiday season. Sometimes I will purchase restaurant gift cards for me to use when I am on the road or traveling. I earn the points and I get a meal when I am out.
Manage your time wisely
Plan in advance so your shopping trip to Tom Thumb is easier. When you have a list it is easier to get what you need in a timely manner. If you find yourself strapped for time use Tom Thumb’s Grocery Delivery service. Order groceries on the Tom Thumb Delivery App, available on iOS™ and Android® devices, or online at shop.tomthumb.com. Tom Thumb’s Grocery Delivery service offers one-hour delivery windows and a Shop By History feature that saves all previously purchased items for easy repeat purchasing.
Pay attention to family and lifestyle changes
Sometimes change is a good thing. Your lifestyle changes, food preferences change and even a budget change can change how you spend your money. If you are saving in one area, you may opt for a name brand or the organic alternative. It really is up to you since those changes are your family’s and it is your money.
