If you’re a single Mom, you may feel that you are the one who always has to be thinking of ways to keep the kids entertained. So here are a few creative craft ideas to help you out. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, maybe you have your eye on that special someone or you want to thank a good friend for helping you out. Or it may be that the kids want to make a present for someone special. Say it with sweets! Everyone – kids and adults alike – loves retro sweets so have some fun saying ‘I love you’ or simply ‘Thanks for being there’.
Make a bracelet for your ‘sweet’ heart!
Present a loved one with a sweet offering of friendship this Valentine’s Day in the form of a valentine’s bracelet made up from all their favourite retro sweets. You need to know the size of the wrist that you want to make the bracelet for, so use a tape measure and cut some stretchy jewellery cord two inches longer than the wrist measurement. Attach a paper clip to one end of the cord to stop your sweets from sliding back off as you thread them. Jelly sweets lend themselves best to making a sweet bracelet because they are easier to put a hole through with a needle, so you can then thread them on. A responsible adult will have to do this bit for the kids. A perfect sweet to choose for a Valentine’s bracelet is Heart Throbs – the attractive red and white jelly sweets encapsulate the spirit of romance. Jelly Buttons are a fun one to pick as these retro sweets come in pink and blue so you can alternate them on the cord to make a pretty bracelet. If you want retro sweets that the kids can attach to the bracelet themselves then Friendship Rings and Happy Cherries are a good choice, not simply because they represent happiness and friendship but because they have natural holes that the jewellery cord can thread through. Remember to leave an inch of the cord at the end of the bracelet to tie together when you’re finished. You’ll then be left with a beautiful stretchy candy creation that not only looks great but tastes fabulous – and they do say the way to the heart is through the stomach!
Peppermint Creams get romantic
Everyone loves Peppermint Creams, right? Well what better wayand get creative with either a date or the kids than by whipping up your own heart-shaped version! It’s so simple yet totally scrumptious and the kids will love it. And if you choose to make them with your date it’s a way to get closer and have a bit of fun. All you need is some peppermints that will melt down easily and some little heart-shaped moulds that can be picked up easily online or from a local store. Pop a peppermint into each of the moulds and bake for approximately 20 minutes (depending on your oven). Keep an eye on them during the process so they don’t over-do. Once baked leave them to cool then gently remove them from their moulds and you’ll have beautifully crafted Peppermint Creams to bring a smile to your loved one’s faces. These are great retro sweets to make yourself for Valentine’s Day because they are so versatile – you can pop them in a gift box for your date, arrange them lovingly on a plate for the kids to share in front of a movie or even present one to the object of your desires at the end of a beautiful home-cooked meal to refresh the palette and add that thoughtful romantic finishing touch.
So you see, its fun to be crafty at Valentine‘s Day! Whether you get creative with the kids or with your date, your handiwork will make life taste all the sweeter!
