I had the pleasure of getting to meet Jon Acuff at the Blissdom 2013 conference held at the Gaylord Texan. The reason why I decided to go to Blissdom was specifically to meet Jon Acuff, an accomplished author and blogger as well as a motivational speaker under the tutelage of Dave Ramsey himself. I’m thrilled that I got to accomplish that. One of the books that Jon has written is called Quitter: Closing the Gap Between Your Day Job & Your Dream Job and he has a new book coming out in April called Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work that Matters.
Thomas Edison failed at many of his inventions and with over 1,000 patents, he viewed failure as a stepping stone to his success. In his effort to refine the lightbulb, it is said that Edison tried over 10,000 times. When asked about his failed attempts he is reported as saying, “I have not failed, I have just found 9,999 ways that do not work.”
The Post- It note was an invention due to numerous by Spencer Silver to create a new super glue at 3M. Aruthur Fry another inventor at 3M, used the glue created by Silver to create sticky, removable bookmarks and so the Post-It note was born. Now Post-It Notes are everywhere.
I have a dream
When I woke up at 5 AM to for one of Acuff’s meetings, I wondered to myself if he was really all that. The 5 AM session was specifically about how to use Twitter to build relationships and I have to say that even as early as 5AM I was hooked. Truly engaging with the audience via Twitter has been such a rewarding experience. Rather than just spitting out links, engaging readers, learning from them and building your posts around what they are engaged in is how I can come up with new content for the blog.
However, I hungered for more and eventually at Blissdom I took the workshop session about Three Stages of Every Awesome Idea. It was such an inspiring session about the steps we need to take in order to accomplish our dreams. I was instantly hooked and attending this conference was definitely a huge part of that experience. I ended up purchasing his books and I really enjoyed what he had to say as the closing speaker.
I am a successful failure
It’s quoted everywhere that you miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take. I believe I am a successful failure. As a divorced mom, I had failed at my marriage and building some relationships and friendships. I have failed at many things as they pertain to my career. I have also failed as a parent on some things. However, failure is such an important part of life that without it even attempting you fail 100% of the time. Success is dependent upon failure. Sometimes God wants us to take a different direction, ask for help from others, or take our time and be patient. Success can happen in ways that you least expect it. I have learned so much from those experiences and it has made me a better parent, worker, friend and much more. It is in those times of failure that I have really been able to accomplish so many things that I’m very proud of.
Accomplishing your Dreams
I sat across another blogger today who is just 27 years old and we began to discuss our plans. I told her that I realized how much time I wasted partying in my twenties and I just wished that I had the same energy I had back then. However, drive and determination can help you appreciate and accomplish many things.
I’m so thankful I went to Blissdom and got to meet Jon Acuff. It was the highlight of my year and I hope you will share the adventures of my journey going forward to hopefully inspire you to reconnect with your dreams and succeed.
When have you been afraid to try because you were afraid to fail?
