2 Starbucks Coffees Cost an Oklahoma Couple Over $4,400 and Forced Them to Cancel a Family Vacation

What was supposed to be a perfectly ordinary morning coffee run turned into a months-long financial nightmare for Jesse and Deedee O’Dell, a married couple from Oklahoma. A bizarre payment error at a Starbucks drive-thru left their bank account drained of more than $4,400, upended their daily finances, and ultimately forced them to abandon a long-anticipated family trip abroad. The story quickly captured national attention as a cautionary tale about the unexpected ways a routine transaction can spiral completely out of control.

The incident took place in January 2023, when Jesse stopped at a Starbucks drive-thru in Tulsa to grab two drinks: an iced Americano for himself and a Frappuccino for his wife. The total came to $11.83, a perfectly reasonable amount for two specialty coffee drinks. Jesse paid with his card and, as he later insisted, selected the option for no tip on the payment screen. He drove away without a second thought, unaware that anything had gone wrong.

Days later, Deedee tried to use the same card at a store and found the transaction declined. When the couple checked their account balance, they were stunned to discover that Starbucks had charged an additional $4,444.44 on top of the original $11.83. A tip of that precise and peculiar amount had somehow been processed against their account, wiping out a significant chunk of their funds. Jesse was adamant about what had happened at the point of sale. “I didn’t select a tip option, but somehow a massive amount ended up on the bill,” he told NBC News at the time.

The O’Dells, who are parents to four daughters, immediately contacted Starbucks to report the error and request a refund. The company acknowledged the problem and promised to make things right, eventually sending two checks in the mail to cover the erroneous charge. The couple’s relief, however, was short-lived. When they went to cash those checks, both came back without sufficient funds behind them. The bounced checks added insult to injury, leaving the family in a prolonged state of financial limbo with no clear timeline for resolution.

The situation had very real consequences beyond the stress and frustration. Jesse and Deedee had been planning a trip to Chonburi, Thailand, the coastal region where Deedee originally grew up. With thousands of dollars effectively frozen and inaccessible, Jesse felt he had no choice but to pull the plug on the journey. “I didn’t want to travel to the other side of the world while thousands of our dollars were blocked somewhere,” he explained. Making matters worse, the airline tickets had been purchased without a refund option, meaning the family absorbed that financial loss on top of everything else.

With the situation unresolved after weeks of back-and-forth with the company, Jesse took the unusual step of filing a police report in Tulsa. Detectives launched an investigation into the charge, and their findings were telling. According to the police department’s statement, investigators determined that the massive tip had been added “either accidentally or due to a device error.” Importantly, the Tulsa police found no evidence of intentional fraud on the part of any Starbucks employee. “We are no longer investigating this case as it has come to our attention that Starbucks is making a good faith effort to return the money to customers,” the department stated.

Following the police involvement, Starbucks issued the O’Dells a fresh set of checks, which this time cleared without issue. The couple finally received their money back after what had been an exhausting ordeal. A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed the resolution in a statement, saying, “It was an unfortunate situation that has been resolved. There was an error with a tip, and we were working to resolve it as quickly as possible. Checks were issued, and the customer has cashed them.”

The case drew widespread attention partly because of the almost theatrical specificity of the error. A tip of exactly $4,444.44 is not a number anyone would enter deliberately, and the repeating digits only added to the surreal quality of the whole experience. For the O’Dells, though, the strangeness of the number provided little comfort while their money sat out of reach for weeks.

Starbucks processes tens of millions of transactions every single day across its roughly 36,000 locations worldwide, and the company’s digital payment system is among the most widely used in the restaurant industry. Point-of-sale tip errors, though rare, are not entirely unheard of, and consumer advocates have long recommended that customers photograph or screenshot their payment confirmations, especially at drive-thrus where the interaction is brief and receipts are easy to lose.
