There are so many ways to have fun while moving your family. Is it stressful? Yes – if you let it become stressful, but if you focus on taking it slow, planning out the entire process, and really having fun, it can be a stress-free and even exciting experience for the whole family! Here are a few of my best tips:
Turn on a fun playlist
When you’re packing or cleaning, there’s nothing like a good playlist to get you in the mood; music also motivates kids and gets them moving. Sit down with your kids and create the ultimate energizing playlist that will help you guys get your packing (+ moving + unpacking) done faster.
You can put tunes that will brighten your moods, and you can encourage your kids to have a packing dance party. Include some songs about moving or traveling as well, so they can relate to them. Music helps everyone have more fun, no matter what you are tasked with, so get some music on and get moving!

Visit the new house ahead of time
If you are able, take the kids over to the new house before moving day. Sometimes children struggle with intangible ideas and places, so the more they know about the new place, the better. Being able to get a feel for the neighborhood and the layout of the new house will make them feel more at home when you move in (and it just might do the same for the grownups, too). While you are at it, if you are allowed inside, go ahead and let them choose their own rooms. When they start daydreaming of what they are going to do in the home, it makes it that much more exciting for them.
Utilize your babysitter
Don’t be afraid to accept the help of friends and family on moving day. There is nothing worse than a tired, stressed-out family trying to load all their possessions into and out of a moving van, if you are moving yourself.
If you can find someone to watch the kids for a few hours while the old house is being cleared and the new one filled, fantastic. Even better if the kids get to do something extra special while they’re away (a trip to the zoo, playground, or anywhere special will take their minds off the stresses of home). If you have a regular babysitter or family member that watches the kids, do not be afraid to use them. In fact, it can be good for them to bring along some sort of normalcy and comfort during a huge life transition for themselves.
Let the kids decorate
When you’re all moved in but the boxes are piling up, you can ask your kids to help with the unpacking. They can even be involved in where your items go; ask them to help with decorating and show them that you value their input. They will feel much more confident that they can speak their minds and they’ll develop a sense of ownership to their new home.
Moving can be hard on anyone, let alone kids. No one is a fan of change. However, keep in mind that there are many ways you can make it fun, especially when they feel heard and included. Soon enough, they might start seeing tasks like these exciting ones, instead of looking at it negatively. This way, your child will feel right at home. Have fun moving with your family – you only get to experience it a few times in your life!
