Woman Reveals How Much She Saved in One Month: “I Gave Up Going Out, Coffee and Treatments”

While many people associate January with gloomy mornings and empty wallets after the holiday season, influencer Hollie decided to use the first month of the year for a financial reset. She completed an entire month participating in a no-spend challenge and managed to save approximately $1,250. Sharing her journey on TikTok, where she posts under the handle @hollieandlife, Hollie provides savings advice to her followers with the goal of purchasing her own home for herself and her four children. Throughout the month, she spent money exclusively on groceries, gas, and bills, eliminating all additional expenses from her budget.

The challenge meant that only completely free activities were allowed, such as taking walks through the forest with her children. “Unless it was reserved in advance, I declined invitations to activities that cost money and chose free things to fill the time,” she told her followers. Her rules were strict and straightforward, limiting spending to just three categories without any exceptions. Going out that required payment was replaced with free outings like visits to galleries, museums, and local events.

To avoid unnecessary expenses, Hollie went grocery shopping only once per week. “I don’t buy extras. My food budget is what it is, and when I do the shopping, I have to wait until next week to buy more. If I run out of any food item or product, I have to manage until the next weekly shop,” she explained. There were no restaurant meals, not even the cheap ones, and no morning coffees to go or food delivery orders. Beauty treatments such as massages, manicures, and hair salon visits were also banned because, according to Hollie, they are “wants, not needs.”

Since January has ended, Hollie confirmed that she successfully saved her estimated $1,250. “The other day I was with the girls from rugby and we talked about how crazy it is that I will actually manage to save this much,” she shared. She realized that this is exactly how much she normally spends every month on everyday, routine things. “It really showed me how important daily habits are for achieving any goal,” she said. “My paycheck comes in on Friday and I’ve never had this much money in my account before payday. It’s a feeling of progress.”

Hollie opened up about her financial situation and motivation for the challenge. “I earn quite decently, I wouldn’t classify myself among the poor or those who barely make ends meet. I wouldn’t call myself rich either, but I live comfortably. And yet I had the habit of living paycheck to paycheck. And that’s what I’m trying to change here, I’m trying to create more stability,” she added. Her transparency about her comfortable income yet paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle resonated with many people who found themselves in similar situations despite earning decent salaries.

Her followers supported her effort and expressed admiration for her dedication throughout the challenge. “Really cool challenge, good luck with it!” wrote one commenter. Another shared valuable advice passed down through generations stating “My grandfather, who is 87 years old, taught me to save and always said that the first $1,250 is the hardest to save, but once you succeed, you will never spend money carelessly again because you realize how hard it is to save.” A third follower commented “You definitely made me more aware of my daily spending.”

The no-spend challenge has become increasingly popular as people seek ways to regain control over their finances and break free from consumerism. This type of challenge typically involves setting strict rules about what expenses are necessary versus discretionary, forcing participants to distinguish between genuine needs and impulsive wants. Many people who complete these challenges report not only financial savings but also a shift in their relationship with money and consumption habits. The psychological benefits often include reduced stress about finances, increased mindfulness about spending decisions, and a greater appreciation for free or low-cost activities.

Financial experts generally support short-term spending freezes as a tool for resetting habits and building awareness around money management. These challenges can help identify spending leaks in a budget and highlight areas where small daily expenses add up to significant amounts over time. The key to success often lies in planning ahead, finding free alternatives to paid activities, and having clear financial goals that provide motivation during difficult moments. However, experts also caution that sustainable financial health requires long-term habit changes rather than just temporary restrictions, making it important to use these challenges as a springboard for lasting behavioral shifts.
