Most people assume tortoises are slow, plodding animals that would be among the last to escape danger. A three-year-old tortoise named Leo from Fullerton, California, turned that assumption completely on its head when he was caught on security camera footage darting away from a raging fire that completely destroyed his backyard home. The clip has since gone massively viral on TikTok, racking up more than 2.9 million views and introducing the world to perhaps the fastest tortoise anyone has ever seen.
The incident happened on February 8th, while Leo’s owner, Hyeri Tom, was away at a Super Bowl party. A faulty heating lamp inside Leo’s outdoor enclosure malfunctioned and ignited the structure while no one was home to intervene. The security camera captured everything, showing the little reptile moving at a surprisingly urgent pace, putting as much distance between himself and the growing flames as he possibly could. Leo made it all the way to the far end of the backyard, well away from the fire.
What made the situation even more fortunate was the swift response from neighbors who spotted the blaze before it had a chance to spread further. They managed to extinguish the fire quickly, limiting the damage to Leo’s enclosure alone. Had the fire jumped to the surrounding area, the outcome could have been far more serious, both for the property and for Leo himself. By the time Hyeri Tom returned home, her tortoise was safe and unharmed, waiting at the other end of the yard.
@leothehomelesstort In all seriousness—thankful beyond words for attentive neighbors who helped put out the fire. 🙏 Leo is safe ❤️ The heat lamp fell and ignited the substrate. Posting this as a warning to other tortoise owners: secure your heat lamps. This could’ve ended very differently. Also, open to any advice on how to build her house safer. #turbo #tortoisesoftiktok #fire ♬ Welp, Didn't Expect That – Yu-Peng Chen & HOYO-MiX
The footage resonated with millions of viewers not just because of how surprisingly fast Leo moved, but because of the raw survival instinct on display. Tortoises are not typically associated with speed or quick reactions, which made the video all the more striking and entertaining. People across social media were stunned to see a tortoise demonstrate such clear awareness of danger and such a decisive response to it. Leo essentially became an unlikely internet hero overnight.
For anyone who keeps reptiles as pets, the incident also serves as an important reminder about the risks that come with heating equipment. Reptile enclosures, especially those kept outdoors, often rely on heat lamps to maintain the warm temperatures that cold-blooded animals need to survive. These lamps, if left unsupervised or if they malfunction, can become serious fire hazards. Regularly inspecting heating equipment and using proper safety setups can go a long way in preventing tragedies like the one Leo barely escaped.
Tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles, meaning they depend entirely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature, which is why heating lamps are so commonly used in their care. In the wild, tortoises bask in the sun to warm up and retreat to shade or burrows to cool down, and their enclosures need to mimic this environment as closely as possible. Despite their reputation for slowness, tortoises are actually capable of moving at a reasonable speed when sufficiently motivated, particularly in situations of perceived danger. Some species, like the desert tortoise, have even been known to travel fairly large distances in a single day when searching for food or water. Tortoises can live for several decades, with some species reaching well over a hundred years, and they develop surprisingly strong bonds with familiar environments and routines, which may explain why Leo so instinctively sought the safety of his own yard rather than attempting to leave it entirely.
