At 84 years old, Martha Stewart shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, and she recently pulled back the curtain on the habits that keep her looking and feeling younger than her age. In a candid new interview covered by Us Weekly, the lifestyle mogul detailed everything from her unconventional sleep schedule to her strict skincare regimen, giving fans a rare look at what a typical day actually looks like for her.
When it comes to sleep, Stewart’s approach is anything but conventional. She admitted that she only gets “three to four hours” of rest per night, and that she does not sleep particularly well. Rather than forcing herself to lie in bed, she fills those wakeful hours by reading or watching educational videos, and she sometimes manages to squeeze in a quick nap in the car between meetings. It is a routine that most sleep experts would raise an eyebrow at, yet Stewart swears by it.
Her skincare routine, on the other hand, is where Stewart gets truly disciplined and detailed. She emphasized that thorough cleansing before applying any serums or night creams is absolutely essential, explaining her process step by step. “The key is to thoroughly clean your face before serums and night cream. I use a gentle camellia oil or oils from other brands that make great oils, like Tatcha. I apply it all over my face because during the day I usually wear makeup for TV appearances or shoots,” she said. After applying the oil, she uses a warm, damp cloth to remove mascara and any remaining makeup, then follows up with an ice-cold cloth to close the pores before layering on a serum.
For the final step of her evening skincare, Stewart reaches for Elm Biosciences night cream. The instructions suggest using a pea-sized amount, but Stewart is not one to hold back. “Then I apply an ice-cold cloth, then a serum, and then a good night cream. The Elm Biosciences directions say a pea-sized amount is enough, but I probably put three times that amount on my face, neck, and décolletage,” she explained. It is a generous approach, but one that clearly suits her well given how radiant she continues to look at her age.
Beyond skincare, Stewart’s fitness regimen is equally impressive and structured. Every other morning at 6:30 a.m., she does reformer Pilates, and on the remaining days she lifts heavy weights with a personal trainer. She also visits Mario Badescu for a facial every three weeks and treats herself to a weekly massage to keep her body feeling its best.
Her approach to food is just as intentional, and she makes no room for mindless snacking. “I am not a grazer. I love good, delicious food… I had a can of really good sardines and half a fresh mozzarella. I had an endive salad with a dressing I made myself, a little watermelon, and whole pomegranate seeds. I love pomegranate and eat one every day,” she shared. Her meals are clearly focused on whole, nutrient-dense ingredients rather than processed convenience foods.
Martha Stewart was born on August 3, 1941, in Jersey City, New Jersey, and built one of the most recognizable lifestyle brands in American history. She studied at Barnard College and later worked as a stockbroker before pivoting to catering and eventually launching Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Her brand grew to encompass television, magazines, books, and merchandising, making her a household name across multiple generations. She famously served five months in federal prison in 2004 following a conviction related to insider trading, but returned to the public eye and rebuilt her career remarkably quickly. Reformer Pilates, which Stewart practices regularly, is a form of exercise performed on a specialized machine called the Reformer that uses springs and pulleys to provide resistance training. It is widely praised for improving posture, core strength, and flexibility, and is particularly popular among older adults because it is low-impact while still being highly effective. Pomegranates, which Stewart eats daily, are rich in antioxidants, particularly punicalagins and anthocyanins, and have been linked to reduced inflammation and improved heart health in numerous studies.
