A Lioness Snatched a Woman’s Jacket on a Safari: “Girl, Are You for Real?”

A Lioness Snatched a Woman’s Jacket on a Safari: “Girl, Are You for Real?”

A group of tourists visiting a game reserve near Pretoria, South Africa, signed up for what they hoped would be a peaceful and memorable wildlife experience. What they got instead was a wildlife encounter of a completely different kind, one that quickly found its way onto the internet and left millions of people laughing. A lioness decided that a jacket hanging inside their vehicle was far too tempting to ignore, and what followed became one of the most talked-about safari clips in recent memory. The woman who filmed and shared the whole thing could barely believe what she was witnessing.

The TikTok user known as kitchentalks8 posted the footage, which showed a group of tourists riding in a truck near a shaded area where a male lion and two lionesses were resting. The vehicle appeared to be secured with a metal barrier, which most would assume would be enough to keep the animals at a comfortable distance. One of the lionesses, however, had other ideas. She rose calmly from her spot, strolled over to the truck with complete confidence, and used her jaws to grab an expensive jacket belonging to the filmer’s best friend before yanking it clean out of the vehicle.

The reaction from the tourists was immediate and audible. Gasps and shocked exclamations filled the footage as the lioness trotted off with her new prize, tearing at it as though it were prey she had just caught in the wild. The jacket’s owner, clearly still processing what had just happened, reportedly asked whether someone could go retrieve it because it had cost a lot of money. That request, more than anything else in the video, became the moment everyone could not stop talking about.

@kitchentalks8 I’ve been to a manu Safari’s but this was a first🫨 We had parked the Safari vehicle and were about to learn about the lions that were actually a bit further away and lazily laying under the tree. The lioness got up, slowly approached the vehicle and 🕊️ took bestie’s expensive jacket🫂 I’m sure it was the shock talking but she asked if someone could go and get it because it was expensive – my friend and I had to duck because – gurl, be for real😭 but rip👀 to your jacket though #safari #southafticantiktok #lionking #trynottolaughtiktoktv #trendingvideo ♬ original sound – kitchentalks

Kitchentalks8 described the scene in detail in the caption of her post. “We approached an area where lions were resting under a tree. The lioness got up, slowly approached the vehicle, and grabbed my best friend’s expensive jacket,” she wrote. She also noted that the owner’s reaction left her and her friend exchanging completely baffled glances, writing “My friend and I just looked at each other in disbelief. Like, girl, be realistic.” The poster also mentioned that despite having been on multiple safaris before, this was the first time anything remotely like this had ever happened to her.

The video spread rapidly across social media, racking up 2.8 million views and more than 1,800 comments. Most viewers met the situation with humor rather than sympathy for the jacket. One commenter wrote, “She says ‘it’s very expensive’… And the lioness thinks: ‘Looks like we both have expensive taste.’” Another chimed in with, “She says life has no price, but this jacket? Oh, that one is expensive.” A third put things in a blunter perspective with the comment, “It’s expensive, yes, but funerals are expensive too.” The general consensus online seemed to be that the lioness made the right call, and that questioning it was perhaps not the wisest move.

Game drives and safari tours in South Africa, particularly in the Pretoria and Greater Limpopo regions, are among the most popular wildlife tourism activities on the continent. Vehicles used on these tours are typically open or semi-open, and while guides are trained to maintain safe distances from animals, unpredictable behavior from wildlife is always a possibility. Operators generally advise visitors to keep all belongings secured inside the vehicle and to avoid dangling anything over the sides, precisely because large predators are naturally curious about unfamiliar objects and smells.

African lions are the second largest big cat species in the world, after tigers, and are known for their intelligence and opportunistic behavior. Lionesses in particular are highly active hunters and tend to be more aggressive and inquisitive than their male counterparts. They use their environment and surroundings to their advantage, and anything that catches their attention, whether it moves, smells interesting, or simply looks out of place, can quickly become a target. In the wild, lions have been observed stealing food and objects from other animals and even from vehicles on numerous occasions, which is why safari guidelines are taken so seriously by experienced guides.

South Africa is home to several iconic game reserves and national parks, with Kruger National Park being the largest and most visited. The greater Pretoria area, where this particular incident took place, also hosts a number of private reserves and safari operations that offer close encounters with the Big Five, which include lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and Cape buffalo. These experiences draw millions of visitors from around the world each year and remain one of the country’s most significant sources of tourism revenue.
