A Tourist Left Her Balcony Door Open in Mexico and Got an Unexpected Hotel Guest

Most travelers know the golden rule of keeping their hotel room secure, but one woman on vacation in Mexico decided to crack her balcony doors open for just a couple of minutes and ended up with the last guest she ever expected. The encounter was captured on video and quickly spread across the internet, racking up millions of views and generating a wave of entertained reactions from people everywhere.

Julie Wallace was staying at a resort in Xcaret, a well-known eco-archaeological park along Mexico’s Riviera Maya, when she stepped away from her room briefly. In the caption of her now-viral TikTok clip, she described the situation simply: “POV: I left the balcony door open for 2 minutes in Xcaret.” What unfolded next had the entire internet losing its mind, with the video accumulating more than 7 million views.

The uninvited guest turned out to be a spider monkey, a species commonly found throughout the Riviera Maya region. Without any sense of urgency, the monkey strolled right into the tidy room, leaped onto the neatly made bed, and made itself completely at home among the pillows. As if that weren’t enough, it also spotted a piece of clothing and decided to take that along as a souvenir when it finally departed. Wallace later confirmed in the comments that the monkey did indeed walk off with her clothing.

The comment section of the video became just as entertaining as the footage itself. One viewer joked that the monkey seemed to be saying “oh, this is sooo good” as it sprawled across the bed, while another cleverly referenced the iconic moment from ‘Titanic’ with the line “Draw me like one of your French girls.” Several people compared the monkey’s relaxed, all-inclusive attitude to that of a tourist who had indulged just a little too much at the resort buffet. One commenter quipped “That’s the hotel manager,” and after the monkey grabbed the clothing, another chimed in with “I’ll look so bonita in this.”

Xcaret itself is one of the most celebrated destinations along the Yucatan Peninsula, spanning over 490 acres of lush jungle and coastal terrain. The park is home to underground rivers, ancient Mayan ruins, and a wide variety of wildlife including jaguars, tapirs, flamingos, howler monkeys, and spider monkeys, many of which live in protected natural habitats within the property. It functions as both a tourist attraction and a conservation center, with programs dedicated to preserving native species and ecosystems.

Spider monkeys, known scientifically as Ateles, are among the most agile primates in the Americas. They get their name from their remarkably long limbs and prehensile tail, which acts almost like a fifth hand and allows them to swing effortlessly through the tree canopy. They are highly intelligent and curious animals, which probably explains why an open balcony door and a neatly arranged room proved far too tempting to pass up. In the wild, they live in groups and communicate through a variety of vocalizations and gestures, and they are known to be bold and investigative when they encounter new environments.

The Riviera Maya is a stretch of Caribbean coastline in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, running roughly 80 miles from Cancun down to Tulum. It has become one of Mexico’s most visited tourist corridors, attracting millions of international visitors every year thanks to its turquoise waters, ancient ruins, and biodiverse jungle. Wildlife encounters, particularly with spider monkeys, are not unusual for tourists staying near nature reserves or eco-parks in the area, though few end up going quite as viral as Julie Wallace’s unexpected room service.
