3 Simple Monthly Self Checks Every Woman Should Make Time For

A quick look at your own body can feel like a small thing, but it can make a big difference in noticing changes early. Dr. Carys Sonnenberg, a GP focused on women’s health and the founder of the menopause clinic Rowena Health, is encouraging women to build a simple monthly habit. Her suggestion is to tie three self checks to an easy reminder, the first day of every month. If that date has already passed, she says it still makes sense to do the checks now and then return to the routine next month.

Sharing the tip on her TikTok account @Rowenahealth_menopause, Dr. Sonnenberg recommends three areas to review regularly. The first is a breast check, the second is a vulva check, and the third is a scan of your skin for changing moles, including the scalp. Her point is not to turn anyone into a doctor at home, but to help people recognize what is normal for them. When you know your baseline, you are more likely to spot something new, unusual, or persistent.

For breast checks, Dr. Sonnenberg notes that CoppaFeel! is a helpful place to learn what to look for and what should be discussed with a GP. The charity’s message is simple, monthly checks help you understand what is typical for your breasts, chest muscles, and chest area. It also reminds people that some changes can be linked to the menstrual cycle and other normal fluctuations. The goal is not perfection, it is consistency and awareness.

For the other checks, you may need practical tools and a little help. Dr. Sonnenberg suggests using a mirror for the vulva check so you can actually see what you are assessing. When it comes to moles, you might need someone to look at your back for you, especially if you have many marks or freckles. She also urges people not to forget the scalp, since changes there can be easy to miss.

Reporting shared by The Mirror highlighted a list of possible warning signs CoppaFeel! encourages people to take seriously. These include skin dimpling or puckering, a new lump or swelling in the armpit or near the collarbone, unusual lumps or thickening, nipple discharge, and a crusting or rash on or around the nipple. Other changes include a nipple turning inward or changing direction, a sudden shift in breast size or shape, and persistent, unusual pain in the breast, chest, or armpit. The charity also notes broader symptoms such as sleep problems, weakness, nausea, appetite loss, sudden weight loss, and ongoing fatigue, which can have many causes but should still be discussed with a GP if they worry you.
