Britney Spears Was Chased by Police for an Hour and Her Team Has Spoken Out

Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of opiates following a harrowing chase that stretched nearly an hour along a California highway. The 44-year-old pop star was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County at approximately 9:30 PM on a Wednesday evening after officers observed her vehicle dangerously weaving between lanes. She was driving a black 2026 BMW convertible and was released from custody shortly after her arrest. Spears is required to appear in court on Monday, May 4.

A recording of the 911 emergency call, obtained by the Daily Mail, paints a vivid picture of the chaotic situation as it unfolded in real time. Dispatchers and officers could be heard relaying urgent information back and forth throughout the pursuit. At one point, a dispatcher described the scene as: “Black car, braking sharply, weaving and driving without the rear light on.” Another officer was heard calling for reinforcements, saying: “Can you please send all units to this area?”

The chase is believed to have started around 8:13 PM, with Spears continuously switching lanes throughout the ordeal. About an hour later, at roughly 9:13 PM, a dispatcher confirmed: “The driver has exited the vehicle.” Following the stop, a Drug Recognition Expert was called to the scene. Drug Recognition Experts, commonly referred to as DREs, are officers specifically trained by the California Highway Patrol to evaluate whether a driver is impaired by substances other than alcohol.

In the wake of the arrest, a representative for the singer released a statement to the Daily Mail. “This is an unfortunate incident for which there is no excuse,” the statement read. “Britney will take the necessary steps and respect the law and we hope this can be the first step towards long overdue changes that need to happen in her life.” The statement continued: “We hope she will get the help and support she needs in this difficult time. Her sons will spend time with her, and her loved ones will devise a long-overdue plan to ensure her success and well-being.”

Spears has two sons with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, both of whom currently live with their father in Hawaii. The boys have largely stayed out of the public eye in recent years, though their mother’s ongoing struggles have continued to attract widespread media attention. This latest incident is far from Spears’ first brush with the law behind the wheel. Last February 12, she was caught on camera holding her phone to her ear while driving through Los Angeles, which is illegal under California law. She has also reportedly been seen crossing into oncoming traffic following nights out.

Her traffic-related legal history goes back nearly two decades. In 2007, Spears was reported for a hit-and-run after striking a parked vehicle, though the charge was dropped after she compensated the car’s owner for an undisclosed amount. The following year, she was cited for driving without a valid California driver’s license, but a judge ultimately dismissed that case as well.

Spears’ personal struggles have played out in the public eye for years, drawing concern from fans and observers around the world. Her most publicized crisis came in 2007 when she shaved her head at a hair salon and struck a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella, events that led to her entering a rehabilitation facility. In January 2008, after refusing to hand her children over to Federline following a custody dispute, she was placed under a conservatorship that would last 13 years and was largely controlled by her father, Jamie Spears. The conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, after a lengthy and very public legal battle that garnered enormous public sympathy. Since then, Spears has spoken openly about fractured family relationships. In early February, she posted on social media that she was frightened of her relatives, writing: “I am incredibly happy to be alive given how my family used to treat me, and now I am afraid of them.” She added: “They will never take responsibility for what they did. As people, we can forgive, but it is never forgotten.”

Driving under the influence of drugs is treated as a serious criminal offense in California. A first-time DUI conviction can result in fines, mandatory license suspension, required participation in a drug education program, and in some cases, jail time. California law also makes it illegal to use a handheld phone while driving, a rule that applies to all motorists regardless of speed or road conditions. Drug Recognition Experts are certified through a standardized national program and are trained to identify impairment caused by seven categories of substances, including narcotics, stimulants, and depressants. Their evaluations can be used as evidence in DUI prosecutions.
