Two young women set out for what they thought would be a peaceful paddle along the Australian coastline. They were gliding through calm waters near Byron Bay when something large moved just beneath their kayak. In an instant the relaxed outing became a moment of pure panic as they spotted a shark swimming right under them. The entire encounter was captured on video and quickly spread across social media.
Mia who shared the clip on TikTok described the scene with her friend as they frantically tried to track where the shark had gone. One of them can be heard exclaiming where is it and what the heck is this while the other kept asking the same question in shock. At one point Mia herself broke down in tears saying she was crying and felt like she was dying from the surprise. She later confirmed in the post that yes there were definitely tears during the ordeal.
Byron Bay sits on the east coast of New South Wales and draws visitors with its beautiful beaches and excellent surfing conditions. The warm waters and plentiful fish attract several shark species including grey nurse sharks tiger sharks and occasionally great whites. Spotting one in clear shallow areas is fairly common for locals and tourists alike although actual attacks remain extremely rare. Still seeing a sizable shark pass directly below a small kayak can feel terrifying in the moment.
The video text overlay perfectly captured the situation by saying picture two girls just kayaking out in the middle of the Australian sea and then spotting a shark. It has already racked up more than six hundred eighty six thousand views and sparked lively conversations in the comments. Some viewers tried to reassure the pair explaining that if you can see the shark you are usually safe because most attacks happen from deeper water without warning. Others wondered aloud whether kayaking in those waters is even a good idea at all.

Mia responded honestly to one concerned comment admitting that while it is generally safe it certainly did not feel that way when the shark appeared. Many people shared their own strong reactions imagining how they might have handled the surprise. One person wrote that their whole life flashed before their eyes while another joked they would have suffered a full panic attack and possibly a heart issue from the fright. A different commenter recalled a similar scary paddle in the same area where their kayak flipped and they ended up surrounded by jellyfish before strangers helped them back to safety.
Encounters like this remind everyone that the ocean is a wild and unpredictable place even in popular tourist spots. Byron Bay offers incredible marine life but it also demands respect and a bit of caution from those who venture out on the water. The viral clip has entertained thousands while gently highlighting how quickly a fun adventure can shift into an adrenaline filled memory. People continue to watch and laugh or shudder at the genuine fear on the women’s faces.
