A Canadian visitor to Las Vegas found himself in serious trouble after a wild night that ended with him behind bars. The incident took place at the iconic Flamingo Hotel and Casino on the Strip where the property maintains a popular habitat for several flamingos. Surveillance footage captured the man shirtless carrying one of the birds through an elevator and down a hallway before hotel security stepped in. What started as an apparent impulsive act quickly escalated into charges of animal cruelty that shocked many who saw the videos circulating online.
The 33-year-old man from Ontario named Mitchell Fairbarn entered the flamingo enclosure around five in the morning after a night of drinking. He jumped the fence and spent roughly eight minutes inside the area home to six birds. During that time he injured two of them while trying to catch one named Peachy. Witnesses and security reports noted that he grabbed the bird by its legs and pinned it to the ground causing visible harm. The other flamingos in the habitat include Omega Pitbull Blackjack Bugsy and Bubbalicious and staff confirmed that two suffered significant injuries with concerns that one might not survive.
Fairbarn later told police he believed the bird looked hurt and wanted to help by popping its wing back into place a technique he claimed to know from his childhood on a farm. He compared it to common practices with ducks or similar animals. However authorities discovered video on his phone that allegedly showed him mistreating the flamingo in his hotel room including pulling the wing out and disrupting blood flow. This evidence contradicted his explanation and led to his arrest on four felony counts of intentionally torturing maiming or killing a federally protected migratory species.
Hotel security responded promptly once they noticed the missing bird and the injured ones. A guard described the scene saying they found one flamingo gone and two badly hurt with one possibly facing fatal injuries. They contacted police who took the man into custody after reviewing the footage. Caesars Entertainment which owns the Flamingo released a strong statement emphasizing that the safety and well-being of their famous flock remains their top priority. They vowed to pursue the maximum charges against the guest and noted that the beloved birds including the 27-year-old Peachy are now receiving excellent care from dedicated veterinarians.
Peachy is recovering at the Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital under the supervision of medical director Dr. Tiffany Moore. She reported that the bird was alert and stable upon arrival though it had some wing injuries. Flamingos in captivity can live up to 50 years so the team remains hopeful for a full recovery. In the meantime the hotel has taken additional steps to secure the habitat including installing a new fence to prevent any future intrusions. The entire episode has sparked widespread outrage among animal lovers and visitors who view the flamingos as a cherished part of the Las Vegas experience.
Fairbarn appeared in court and posted the twelve thousand dollar bail amount. As conditions of his release he must wear a GPS monitor avoid owning any animals and surrender his passport while remaining in the area for further proceedings scheduled in early May. The case highlights how quickly a seemingly fun trip to Sin City can turn into lasting legal consequences especially when wildlife is involved. Many have expressed disbelief at the bizarre choices made that night and continue to follow updates on the flamingos’ progress.
