A tiny dog with the face of a stuffed teddy bear has taken the internet by storm, mostly because no one can believe how old he actually is. In a TikTok video that has since racked up over 1.1 million views, a woman named Jeni approaches her dog Buddy, dressed in duck-print pajamas, and he immediately flips onto his back for a belly rub. His youthful appearance and playful energy had millions of viewers convinced they were looking at a young pup. The twist is that Buddy is 15 years old, a senior dog that Jeni lovingly calls her “forever puppy.”
Jeni told Newsweek that strangers tend to lose their minds whenever they encounter Buddy in person, and the reaction online has been no different. She noted that he seems to grow younger rather than older over time. According to her, “Buddy is a rescued dog. He was found by my uncle wandering the streets looking for food near a trash can.” A veterinarian at the time estimated Buddy was roughly two years old, and that assessment became the official story.
Jeni’s uncle eventually offered the dog to her for just $50 when she was only eight years old. The two have been inseparable ever since. Jeni describes Buddy’s personality in glowing terms, saying that “Buddy has always acted like a puppy. He is a baby, he loves his toys, his food, attention and belly rubs.” That carefree, babyish energy is a huge part of why people are so floored when they hear his age.
The confusion tends to play out in real time whenever Jeni takes Buddy out in public. She described how strangers would photograph him, gush over how adorable he is, and even video call their family members on the spot just to show them. “They’d ask me what breed he was and guess he would grow into a huge dog,” Jeni explained. “I’d cut them off and tell them he’s actually a senior, which would leave them in complete shock.” It is a scene she has clearly repeated more times than she can count.
Part of Buddy’s unique charm lies in his unusual genetic makeup. A DNA test revealed he is a mix of five different breeds, specifically shih tzu, golden retriever, beagle, chow chow, and pit bull. That combination gives him a one-of-a-kind look that naturally draws attention wherever he goes. People who try to guess his breed often assume he will grow up into a massive dog, making the senior reveal all the more unexpected.
On the health front, Buddy does carry some of the typical burdens that come with age. Jeni confirmed he has arthritis, a collapsing trachea, and a slightly enlarged heart, conditions that are not uncommon in older dogs. Despite all of that, she says he “looks and acts” like a happy puppy, which is remarkable given what his body has been through. His spirit, it seems, simply refuses to age.

Science might actually help explain part of Buddy’s vitality. A 2023 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that senior dogs who maintained higher levels of daily physical activity tended to have sharper memories, better movement, and longer expected lifespans compared to less active peers. Researchers also determined that physical activity is deeply connected to cognitive health, and that reduced movement in older dogs is often linked to signs of mental decline tied to aging. Newsweek has also noted that consistent daily care routines, including weight management and attention to joint and dental health, can meaningfully extend the quality time owners spend with their pets.
Buddy’s small size likely works in his favor as well. It is widely understood in veterinary science that smaller dog breeds tend to outlive their larger counterparts, a pattern that researchers continue to study. The combination of good care, an active temperament, and a compact frame may all be contributing factors in Buddy’s remarkable longevity.

The TikTok comments lit up with disbelief. One viewer wrote, “15 years? Surely you mean 15 months, right?” while another chimed in with “He is just a baby. He wears a onesie!” A third commenter joked, “He’s 15 minutes old and the size of a loaf of bread.” Jeni took the flood of affection in stride, saying, “Buddy truly is a forever puppy, and the love that everyone gives him is amazing. I’m overjoyed knowing my little one is loved around the world.”
In general, dogs are considered seniors at different ages depending on their size. Small breeds like Buddy tend to reach senior status around age ten to twelve, while larger breeds may be classified as seniors as early as seven. Mixed-breed dogs, sometimes called mutts or designer dogs depending on their background, are often noted by veterinarians for displaying what is called hybrid vigor, a tendency to be hardier and healthier than purebred animals due to their wider genetic diversity. Common senior dog conditions include arthritis, dental disease, vision and hearing loss, and heart issues, all of which can be managed with proper veterinary care and lifestyle adjustments.
