I have not paid much attention to the safety of my children’s eyes whether they are playing sports or if we are out and about running errands. I do get their eyes checked and so far they don’t need prescription eyeglasses but I never put much thought into protecting their vision from regular sports or rough and tunble play. When I was asked to receive some free samples of Liberty Sport’s F8 brand of protective eyewear there was little that I really knew about it. So I decided to do some research on how prevalent eye injuries are with kid’s in sports and activities
Ninety Percent of sports related eye injuries can be avoided with the use of protective eyewear
According to the National Eye Institute, a division of the National Institutes for Health, Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States and most injuries occurring in school-aged children are sports-related.
Check out this video from Liberty Sports about protecting your children’s eyes.
Even if your child doesn’t need a prescription there is still a lot that protective eyewear can do for your children. I found the particular models I received from Liberty Sport in the F8 and Morpheus 1 seemed to fit my 6 year old very well. She plays basketball and I think this can definitely help with elbows and balls to the face etc. My 3 year old also tried them on and with the strap in the back they also stayed on her face.
Key Features of the F8 Street Series
Some key features that I really liked for the F8 Street Series was the variety of colors. The one my daughter has on in the photo above is a cute pinkish purple with flowers. This is definitely a unisex product with a variety of colors and designs, ten in all.
- Ten Authentic Designs inspired by a fusion of sports performance and street art.
- Unisex Shape.
- Meets or exceeds ASTM F803 impact resistance for several sports.
- Patented (#6,890,073) eye rim assembly and 6-base lens curve design allows for a wide range of prescription lens powers.
- Sculpted temple design with color coordinated inside padding.
- Temples and bridge have soft, color coordinated padding for comfort and fit.
- Comes with a matching graphic artwork micro-fiber pouch and custom metal case.
This one is also available as a prescription. Note: These are not sunlenses and so do not offer protection against UV rays. Also, these lenses offer a great amount of protection but is not guaranteed to prevent all due to the very nature of athletics and sports. Parts may need to be replaced if they suffer damage from an impact.
Morpheus 1
My daughter also had the opportunity to try on the Morpheus 1 – almost similarly designed, this particular eyewear does not have the designs of the F8, but does have a great wraparound design. As in the F8 Street Series, some key features of the Morpheus include:
- Unisex Shape.
- Meets or exceeds ASTM F803 impact resistance for several sports.
- Patented (#6,890,073) eye rim assembly and 6-base lens curve design allows for a wide range of prescription lens powers.
- New dramatic two tone color treatments.
- Sculpted temple design with color coordinated inside padding.
- Temples and bridge have soft, color coordinated padding for comfort and fit.
- Comes with semi-rigid case, cleaning cloth and adjustable strap.
- Also available in prescription and does not offer UV protection.
Part and Accessories
Some of the additional features in these glasses are why I think they are a great option and stylish choice for kids reluctant to wear glasses. I really like the softness of the nose guard to attempt to prevent the glasses from digging into the nose. While it won’t prevent all kinds of injuries 100% this is still a nice feature that doesn’t cause sweat to the child’s nose and doesn’t feel heavy on the face.
I also enjoyed how secure the straps were on the back. They are not going to fall off. They will clip into these little holes at the end of the frames. I found they did not get loose and the elastic went well around the child’s head and stayed secure.
Other Parts and Accessories
The eyewear comes with a great case, lens cloth and carrying bag. I liked this about the Liberty Sport eyewear. The F8 Street Series comes with a metal box and the Morpheus 1 came with a semi soft box. Below are some examples of the cases.
