Demand
There is always a significant demand for medically trained professionals, but emergency medical technicians have seen faster and more substantial growth than any other. They are in such high demand that in some states, graduates and school leavers often manage to land a role pretty quickly.
Retraining or refreshing your current skills can put you in the perfect position for a lifelong role.
Daily Challenge
If you want to have a predictable day, where you do the same thing from start to finish of your shift, then EMT is not the right occupation for you. As an EMT, you will be faced with a range of different challenges each day. While it can be adventurous, almost every day, you will have the opportunity to try to save lives.
Giving the care and support that people need in their worst and most painful hours.
Skills
The skill set that goes along with being an EMT is extensive, and you will use a huge range of them every shift that you are on.
You’ll need to be an effective communicator, have fast active listening skills, and understand anatomy, pathology and physiology. Not only that, though, you’ll need some level of psychological understanding too.
What’s more is that you will also have baby-delivering skills, as well as a high level of situational understanding – spotting dangerous situations and how they may unfold at speed.
Rewarding
Becoming qualified in any area of the medical profession will give you a highly rewarding career. That same career satisfaction and sense of achievement comes with EMT training and going into it as a career too. The team you work with will become like a family, and you will face life and death situations and make a significant difference in the lives of the people you help.
While you might not be with the person as they go further into treatment, you will be there to make a difference when it counts.
Career growth
While you might have your eye on the EMT prize for a while, over time, you’ll see that there are plenty of other opportunities to explore. Many EMTs choose to move to different roles like Paramedics, Firefighters, MDs, RNs or PAs.
Further career growth in the medical sector will mean that you need extra training in the specific fields – but you’ll have a strong starting point.
