Ask around about family-favorite SUVs and most likely a member of the Mazda CX-lineup will surface — so when the award-winning 2021 Mazda CX-5 came for review, we couldn’t have been happier. Thank you to the team at Mazda for loaning us the vehicle for the purposes of this review.
You can see some of our other reviews here, but to sum it up, Mazda produces vehicles that have gorgeous paint jobs, handle beautifully and bear elegant and almost restrained shapes. Go inside and you’ll find that the minimalist interiors that efficiently give you what you need and allow the vehicle to elevate and naturally fit into the transitions and routines of modern life. Quite frankly, they have built a brand on giving drivers what they love at a great price point.
Our experience with the CX-5 was no exception.
For the week, we drove. It carried out the roles of modern parenthood with ease. It was a virtual school vehicle to family road trip hauler with a mini-trip to the Discovery Gardens on Rowlett road to see the vineyard, picnic and help my mom with her Master Gardener activities.
Intuitively placed features like cup holders within easy reach, charging ports to fit your devices, a center console that doubles as an arm rest and bright, brilliant, un-complicated 10.25” infotainment center that let’s you make use of the driver safety and navigation features with ease.
Designed to easily fit 5 or 4 with two car seats and the center console down, the CX-5 is car that can carry you from work to play to adventure. The AWD feature in the Premium model is a boon and perfect for Texas. Our roads, climate, weather and terrain almost demand that feature, and I love that it was available in this vehicle. That paired with the 227 Horsepower SkyActiv-G 2.5L Turbo Engine, a braking system that responds beautifully and Off-Road Traction Assist create a relaxing, confidence-inducing drive that let’s you quite simply just drive and not worry about the car.
Other pleasant surprises are the generous cargo space, excellent sound system courtesy of Bose, brilliant gas mileage topping out around 25 mpg (22/27highway), nice pep and go with the creature comforts like Napa Leather trimmed seats, heating and cooling, contoured seats in the front, rear air vents, power-windows and cupholders and charging ports for every passenger… thoughtful details that make the vehicle feel upscale with a heavy nod to the luxurious side of life.
Perfect for small families and drivers that want the flexibility of space that comes with a SUV, the 2021 CX-5 is right in the middle of the crossover line-up for Mazda. Basing at just over $25K, the model as seen above is the Premium AWD addition, which comes in at just over $37K.
