There’s a reason that you that when you mention the GV80, people start to smile. New. Luxury. Gorgeous. Tactile. Family Ready. Accessible Price Point. Stacked. Connected. These are just a few of the words that I would use to describe the first SUV from Genesis. From the same lineage and family that creates the stand-by classics from Hyundai, Genesis has set out to create vehicles that exceed expectation and anticipate the desires that you didn’t even know you had. Mission accomplished.
Recently awarded as Best Luxury SUV by the Texas Auto Writers Association, we had the pleasure of testing out the Award Winning, 2021 Genesis GV80 over the course of a week. The extended time that it would be put to the real-life, kids in the car, life-must-go-on test. Taking a mini-road trip to Fort Worth with three kids, running the errands of modern life from drive-thru to virtual school, the GV80 delighted and was ready with all the features and creature comforts to elevate the everyday drive experience.

From first glance, it’s a striking vehicle. It makes an entrance and draws the eye, regardless of whether or not it is sitting on the curb in front of your house or patiently awaiting valet, the GV80 makes an entrance and draws the eye. The wide etched, diamond lattice of the grille catches the light. Windows are trimmed in smooth silver that sits flush with the vehicle and its frame is set a touch higher off the ground than other full size SUVs, allowing for ease of entry and setting the tone for your drive experience.
Then move closer, open the doors. You’ll probably notice like I did that it doesn’t sling open, the sound is almost silent and that the noise is dampened. Then the soothing chime that welcomes you inside as you settle into the driver’s seat, and within seconds, you realize that the Genesis GV80 more than feels luxurious.
It actually is and that is the point.
Thoughtful Details Make the Difference
Thoughtful details abound in this vehicle. Heads-up display, cushioned touchpoints, power-folding outside mirrors with power hands-free lift gate are all features that make this mom’s heart happy. It shows that the team at Genesis thought carefully about how the vehicle would be used in real life, by real people, in real situations.
From coffee runs to virtual school, life must go on and the Genesis GV80 is ready. Driver assist features like Smart Cruise Control, Forward and Rear Collision Avoidance and Surround / Blind Spot View Monitors add layers of confidence to the drive experience. Remote Smart Parking Assist is so helpful when life is all that life is on a daily basis. Apple Car Play and Android Auto allow for easy tech connectivity, and you can keep your devices charged with an easily accessible wireless charger or plug in port in the front and there are additional plug-in ports that are within easy reach of rear passengers.
Discreet cupholders and adjustable ambient lighting brighten the space and carry the eye along the interior while highlighting features that you won’t want to miss. The GV80 takes it’s cues from aviation and bears the hallmarks of luxury styling from creamy ivory, quilted, pebbled leatherette seating, a seamless touchscreen with a crystal clear image surrounded by matte finished wood accents and lots of white space for ease of movement.
Add that to the to ease-enhancing comfort features including heated/ventilated massage seats, a heated steering wheel, and a massive retractable moon roof — it is no wonder that it was chosen by Tiger Woods as his vehicle of choice.
Under the Hood and A Superior Drive
The model that I tested was the 2021 Genesis GV80 AWD 3.5T Advanced. The 3.5L V6 Automatic drove like a dream. The ride was smooth and construction-laden roads impact was lessened by the electrotonically controlled suspension creating a terrain-adjustable, luxurious drive experience. The 20-inch alloy wheels contrasted well with the beautifully done paint job — in this instance, Lima Red, which is similar to the shade of bubbly deep red wine from Burgundy.
Driving the Future
Available in 4 different trims and starting at $48K (as pictured at just over $65K), the Genesis GV80 is a first offer that creates a beautiful, new definition of what it means to be a luxury SUV… at a gentler price point. It flows easily from the Hyundai mindset of the democratization of luxury, safety and technology. From the polished, thoughtful interiors to sublime tech and an eye-catching shape, we expect the Genesis GV80 to bring many drivers into the Genesis family of vehicles.
