In preparation for flu season, actress Amanda Peet, ambassador of the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life program, received her annual flu shot at Walgreens.
I’m fortunate enough to work for a company that gives their employees free flu shots. If you work for an organization that gives out free flu shots then take advantage of that. Walgreens did a study about the flu and the following survey results were:
- Holiday events missed: 17 million (over a 300 percent increase)
- Vacations missed: 11 million ((over a 267 percent increase)
- School Days Missed: 90 million (in 2010-2011 – 32 million school days were missed)
The flu impacts employees and last year alone employees lost more than $8.5 billion dollars in lost wages. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed (60 percent) say they will take extra precautions to avoid the flu this year, including washing hands more frequently (87 percent), getting a flu shot earlier (51 percent), getting flu shots for family members (49 percent), limiting time in public places (43 percent) and trying working from home more often (11 percent).
On the photo to the left actress Amanda Peet is getting her flu shot at Walgreen’s. She is the Ambassador to the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life Program.
Amanda spoke about the importance of providing life-saving vaccinations to children in need across the globe. According to Shot@Life and the UN Foundation:
- One-in-five children worldwide lack access to lifesaving immunizations;
- A child dies of a vaccine-preventable disease every 20 seconds;
- The number of children dying every year from preventable diseases in developing countries is nearly equal to half the children entering kindergarten in the U.S.
