A very common question that comes out is: What do teenagers want from their parents?
No answer can be claimed to be 100% satisfactory. Conflicts are there. Teenagers use to see things in a different way when compared to parents’. However, one thing is for sure. Teenagers definitely desire for freedom. But, freedom from what? They are not been locked in cells. Then what type of freedom they want? They want to lead an independent life. They don’t want parents poking noses on their day-to-day activities. They dream of making their own decisions. Because of the growing age towards adulthood, such sort of a mind frame is quite natural. They also want their parents to respect their thoughts and decisions. Parents should respect and accept their choices and should appreciate them. Most teenagers have a mindset that they can’t do anything wrong. Whatever they are doing is absolutely perfect and correct and whatever the parents say is totally wrong or misleading. But it is not so! These are negative traits of a teenage mind. Such sort of mindset develops from television shows, b-grade novels, etc. These days, internet is a major medium to brainwash these teenagers.
There are a certain category of teen who have problems expressing their mind out. They are of the shy and introvert category. These type of teens also require a certain amount of privacy in their lives. Parents need to talk and mix with these teens in a friendly and free manner. These type of introvert and non-expressive teens don’t often speak out their minds regard the needs and requirements. More importantly, reading their minds is extremely difficult. The introvert teens are more prone towards self-destruction and suicidal tendency. They often suffer from depression but because of their introvert nature, people around them don’t get to know about such issues.
What teens want and what they don’t is a tricky and sensitive issue. Teens want a certain personal space in their lives. At the same time, influence of parents play a big role. If there is a troubled relationship between parents, that the flame can have negative impact on the teen’s life too.
Here’s some ideas on how to deal with the needs and requirements of a teenager:
Allow the teens to become somewhat independent. However, at the same time, keep a secret watch on their activities and behavior.
Be tolerant for some time but never become overly permissive.
Rules should be there but adjust them according to circumstances and situations.
Be patient and have some open minded discussion with the teens
Respect their privacy but show some interest in their lives. Talk to them about the true values of life and make them understand the ill-effects of drugs and premature sex.
And finally, always be there when the teen asks for help. Also, try to give some advice in a friendly manner.
