Not every romantic getaway goes according to plan, and sometimes the unplanned moments make for the best stories. Amanda Frazier, a woman from Texas, found herself laughing uncontrollably when she stepped out onto the hotel balcony her boyfriend had arranged as part of a surprise Valentine’s Day trip. The couple had checked into the Drury Inn & Suites in San Antonio, a last-minute booking her partner had pulled together as a sweet gesture. What awaited them on the other side of those balcony doors, however, was anything but the dreamy skyline she might have imagined.
Frazier made clear from the start that she had no idea where they were staying. “I had no clue which hotel we’d be at,” she explained, noting that her boyfriend had booked the room just a week before Valentine’s Day, which meant their options were limited. The decision to specifically request a room with outdoor access was all him. “He wanted to try a room with a terrace, one with its own private balcony,” she said. It sounded romantic in theory, and in fairness, the sentiment behind it genuinely was.
The reveal, though, came with an unexpected twist. The Drury Inn & Suites in question sits near the intersection of Interstate 10 and the busy Loop 1604 highway on San Antonio’s north side. While that location is perfectly convenient for visitors heading to nearby theme parks, shopping centers, or universities, it doesn’t exactly offer a postcard-worthy panorama. Frazier says she started piecing it together before they even reached their floor. “While we were in the elevator, it became clear that our room faced Loop 1604,” she recalled, already bracing herself for what was coming.
Rather than letting the view deflate the mood, Frazier leaned into the absurdity of it all. “I thought it was hilarious, and I still do,” she said. She grabbed her phone, filmed the concrete-and-highway spectacle spread out before them, and posted the clip to her TikTok account. The video exploded, racking up more than 4.8 million views. What started as a private laugh between two people on a budget Valentine’s trip had become one of the internet’s favorite accidental comedy moments.
The comments section, predictably, went in a few directions. Some users were genuinely sympathetic, with one person calling it “the balcony of doom and despair.” Another wrote, “This is honestly so sad, I hate America,” while a third chimed in with, “I’m saving this video for the next time someone tries to hype up San Antonio.” The reactions piled up fast, a mix of mock outrage and genuine commiseration from people who have clearly been there in one way or another.

Frazier, for her part, couldn’t have cared less about the pile-on. “My response to the negative comments? Honestly, nothing,” she said plainly. She had a genuinely good time, and no amount of internet commentary was going to change that. “I completely enjoyed the stay. The room was really spacious and clean, and on top of that we had free breakfast and dinner every day,” she said. It turns out that a highway view and a full meal plan is a pretty solid trade-off for a last-minute Valentine’s trip.
Her experience actually aligns with findings from the J.D. Power North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Study, which found that room condition, cleanliness, and the quality of furniture and bathroom finishes were the primary drivers of guest satisfaction, outweighing amenities like views. Frazier’s room checked all those boxes. A stunning view is always a bonus, but as she proved, a tidy room and a free hot breakfast can carry a romantic weekend just fine.
The Drury Inn & Suites chain has been family-owned since its founding in 1973 and is known across the country for its “free extras” policy, which includes complimentary hot breakfasts and evening cocktail hours that are built into every stay, a perk that dates back decades and still sets them apart from larger chains. San Antonio itself is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, having surpassed one million residents faster than almost any other major American city in history. TikTok videos going viral from hotel rooms have actually sparked a measurable bump in bookings for the featured properties, a phenomenon travel industry analysts have started tracking since 2022.
