How to Properly Look After Your Teeth

Food and Nutrition· Health

{This is a sponsored conversation courtesy of our friends at Social Barracuda}

Brushing your teeth twice a day is a great way to keep your mouth healthy, but is that really enough? Though this is a great starting point, there are other important steps which shouldn’t be neglected if you want to achieve good oral health.

Do you keep up with dentist appointments? If not, it’s probably time you visited an elite practice like the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. More than one in five people claim they can’t afford dental treatment, which is unfortunate when you consider the importance of regular check ups. Other practices like flossing are beneficial, regardless of how much hassle it seems. Neglecting your teeth can have serious consequences. With a great smile, your self-confidence will increase tenfold too. Researchers in Sweden have discovered a link between plaque build-up and health problems, considering bacteria build-up as a pressing issue. You’re more likely to suffer from diseases if you don’t give your teeth the attention they need, especially considering bacteria can enter the body and affect your organs.

If you’re wondering how you can keep your mouth healthy, you can get in touch with your nearest dentist similar to Dr. Eric Satterlee. They can help you learn more about how you can take care of your oral health. You can also read on to get, here are some top tips for properly looking after your teeth:

So how can we keep our mouths healthy?

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) set standards which suggest you shouldn’t leave a gap of more than 24 months between dental appointments. If you have gum problems, you should visit your dentist every six months. If you leave it too long, you’re at risk of doing irreversible damage to your teeth and gums. Though people often seek an aesthetically pleasing style, any good dentistry service will tell you oral health is more important than appearance. An example of a good functional dentistry service is tmj splints, who operate in Red Bank, NJ.

Brush Thoroughly

Brush your teeth twice a day for the recommended two minutes. Thorough brushing is important to clean the surface of your teeth. Your main initiative is to remove harmful bacteria which can cause plaque build-up. It’s important to establish a good teeth brushing routine from a young age, but it’s never too late to start. Focus on brushing your teeth at the same time day and night, getting yourself into the habit of brushing for long enough. Wait until an hour after eating to brush your teeth, since acidic foods can soften the tooth enamel, leaving it prone to damage.

Clean Between Teeth

Gum disease is usually a result of food debris getting caught up between your teeth. When it isn’t removed, this can cause irreversible damage. Flossing is a great way to remove food that gets caught up between the teeth before you put your clear aligners back on. You can also use interdental brushes, which come in different shapes and sizes. Sugars in food combine with bacteria to create plaque acid, which eventually erodes the teeth. Focus on eating foods like carrots and apples, because they naturally clean the teeth. When you finish your meal, chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva flow.

Scrape Your Tongue

Your tongue cultivates more bacteria than any organ in the body. Removing this bacteria will get rid of sulfur-producing bacteria, the number one cause of halitosis. If you want fresh breath confidence, incorporate tongue scraping into your teeth brushing routine.
