I recently watched footage from a Florida highway that looks exactly like a stunt from a high-budget action movie. A small aircraft made a desperate emergency landing on the road and crashed directly into a moving car. It is hard to believe that such a chaotic event didn’t result in a tragedy.
The accident happened on I-95 in Brevard County during the evening rush. The pilot reportedly experienced engine trouble shortly after taking off and attempted to bring the plane down safely on the interstate. Unfortunately, he couldn’t avoid a Toyota Camry traveling in the southbound lanes.
The dramatic moment was recorded by a dashboard camera in a vehicle driven by Jim Coffey, who was nearby. He told local reporters that he and his son watched the plane dropping out of the sky just moments before the impact. I can only imagine the shock of seeing an airplane coming down in the middle of traffic.
Coffey recalled thinking that he hoped the pilot would manage to land on the side of the road. Instead, the aircraft’s landing gear slammed right into the back of the sedan. The collision looked severe, but the outcome was surprisingly fortunate.
Amazingly, the 57-year-old driver of the Toyota survived with only minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The 27-year-old pilot and his passenger managed to walk away without a scratch. Federal authorities have since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the mechanical failure.
