Tommy Graves from London took his passion for helping others to an extreme level back in March 2021. The 27 year old threw himself into a charity campaign for a local organization supporting homeless people. What started as dedicated work quickly turned into something far more dangerous when he stopped sleeping altogether. He remained awake for eight full days straight which completely altered his mind and body in ways he never anticipated.
Graves had always struggled with an exhausting pattern in his daily life. He would party hard with friends on weekends and then scramble to recover during the week. This cycle left him drained yet he kept pushing forward. Five years ago he experienced a wake up call about rest when his efforts on the campaign intensified beyond control. The more he focused the harder it became to slow down his racing thoughts.
His brain simply refused to switch off during those intense days. Ideas kept flooding in faster and more wildly with each passing hour. What began as a simple goal to raise funds snowballed into increasingly unrealistic visions. Tension built steadily until sleep felt impossible. He described how everything escalated without him realizing the toll it was taking.
By the sixth day without rest his plans had grown wildly out of proportion. He shifted from aiming to collect around one hundred thirty dollars to dreaming of gathering eighty six million dollars. Grand schemes filled his head including ending racism and sexism stopping all wars and even curing cancer. These thoughts felt completely real to him at the time yet they signaled a deep break from normal thinking.
Reality slipped away entirely as the sleep deprivation took hold. Graves believed he had stepped into the plot of the movie ‘The Truman Show’ where his life was being filmed for an audience. He became paranoid and started hallucinating things that did not exist. Family members noticed his incoherent state despite his belief that he was speaking clearly. They made the difficult decision to seek professional help right away.
Concerned relatives brought him to a psychiatric hospital for immediate care. There he acted out in dramatic ways thinking he needed to perform for invisible cameras. He sang and danced did cartwheels ran along walls and even jumped over one of the nurses. In his mind he had an important meeting scheduled with the queen and felt certain an Oscar awaited him for his efforts. The combination of stress and total exhaustion had triggered a severe manic episode with psychosis.
Doctors eventually used medications to help him fall asleep after days of this turmoil. It took a full four weeks in the hospital under the highest level of supervision for him to gradually return to the real world. During that time his life felt shattered as he processed what had happened. He never imagined such a crisis could strike him personally. The experience left him scared enough to commit to serious change.
Upon leaving the facility Graves felt deep shame and sadness about the ordeal. A doctor advised him to focus on learning proper sleep techniques which became a turning point. He took the guidance to heart and began studying everything he could about rest. This new path helped rebuild his stability step by step. He vowed never to lose touch with reality again.
In April of last year Graves completed his training and qualified as a professional sleep counselor. The transformation amazed him as better rest sharpened his focus and boosted his overall productivity. He now enjoys a balanced routine that maximizes energy without sacrificing enjoyment. Consistent bedtimes and wake up times form the foundation of his approach. He often shares how this shift revealed a fuller richer version of daily living.
Graves actively promotes the idea of making bedtime appealing and socially cool. He suggests heading out around noon and wrapping up activities by nine in the evening. This schedule allows plenty of fun while protecting precious recovery time overnight. He emphasizes that quality sleep connects directly to mental well being in profound ways. Poor rest can worsen or even spark major psychological challenges according to his insights.
His story highlights the hidden dangers of ignoring the need for sleep especially during high stress periods. Many people underestimate how quickly the mind unravels without proper downtime. Graves turned his frightening episode into a positive mission to raise awareness. He encourages everyone to prioritize rest as a non negotiable part of health. Small consistent habits can prevent big problems down the line.
@tommygsleep It was back in 2021. I was working really hard on a project, and the more I worked on it the busier my mind got, which made it stupidly hard for me to get to sleep. In fact, I simply couldn’t sleep. For days. And my grip on planet earth got looser and looser. By day 8 of no sleep, I was thinking, hearing and seeing things that were far from reality. And that earned me a one way ticket to hospital 🏥 Where I spent the next 4 weeks coming back to the real world. 🌍 I was diagnosed with psychosis, and it was caused by sleep deprivation. My doctor said that I needed to learn how to sleep otherwise I could relapse. And since then, in a mad turn in events, I have qualified as a sleep coach And it’s my mission to teach as many people as possible what I’ve learned. 🤷♂️Are you struggling at the moment ?🤷♂️ If so, I am really sorry to hear that. I’d love to support you however I can. I’m hopeful that we can make things feel a little brighter up there. Here are the three things I have found to enhance my sleep the most: – Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. – Avoid screens within 90 mins of bedtime. – Avoid doing anything demanding of you for 90 mins pre-bed (e.g. work, exercise, problem solving, arguing) Otherwise, if you want to learn more, I have a tonne of resources that I am SO happy to share. Comment – “🧠♥️” if you’d like me to send you over some bits. (And we can chat things through if you fancy! Always got time.) FINALLY if you’d like to support my little mission, I would really appreciate you spreading the word by sending this to anyone who you think could benefit. Lots of love. And I hope to speak to you soon. 💙 #mentalhealth ♬ Our Love Was Beautiful – Instrumental Version – Straight White Teeth

Graves case stands out because it shows these risks can hit anyone driven by passion or pressure. His recovery proves that education and routine adjustments lead to lasting improvements. Today he lives as a testament to the power of valuing sleep.
What started as a humanitarian effort taught Graves more than he ever expected about human limits. He now dedicates his work to helping others avoid similar pitfalls. Simple changes like fixed schedules can transform energy levels and mood dramatically. His journey reminds us all that pushing too hard without recovery comes at a real cost.
