An 11-month-old British Shorthair named Moon River has captured the hearts of cat lovers across Italy after being crowned the country’s most beautiful feline. The stunning cat, known for her striking blue-golden shaded coat, claimed the prestigious title of Il Gatto d’Italia โ Il Mio Nome รจ Victoria for 2025 at the Anima Cat Mundi 2026 event. The competition took place at the Seraphicum Institute in Rome and was organized by the Italian National Feline Technical Federation, known as ENFI. International judges, all former breeders with decades of experience, carefully evaluated cats of various breeds grouped by coat length, according to Life Animal.
The two-day showcase was a true celebration of feline beauty, bringing together what many described as genuine whiskered stars competing for the most coveted titles. Cats were assessed with close attention to breed standards, coat quality, and overall appearance. For passionate cat enthusiasts, it was a rare opportunity to witness the finest examples of the breed all in one place. The event drew significant attention from the Italian felinology community and beyond.
Moon River hails from the Red Carpet Cattery in Fiano Romano, a breeding facility run by Cristiana Capone, a lifelong cat lover who at one point shared her home with as many as five cats at the same time. Capone took the leap into professional breeding in 2018, inspired by the success of her Highland Fold cat named Cicciciao, who had previously won the Maximum Winner title. With the support of ENFI and Pet Akademija, and in collaboration with the National Association of Italian Veterinarians (Anvi), she went on to complete a master’s degree specifically for cat breeders. She has continued her education ever since, attending programs focused on grooming, animal welfare, nutrition, and feline psychology.
Capone describes her cattery as something of a luxury resort for cats. She operates across two locations โ one in Fiano Romano and another in the province of Prato โ and currently cares for a total of 40 cats. The Fiano Romano facility is made up of 20 small wooden apartments, each measuring about 107 square feet, with an additional outdoor enclosed space of roughly 54 square feet per unit. These individual cat suites are fully equipped with beds, indoor and outdoor litter areas, wall shelves, climbing paths, air conditioning, heating, and even background music. Every cat at the cattery is also tested for polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a hereditary condition that can affect certain breeds.
Moon River was not the only star of the Anima Cat Mundi 2026 event, as the Rome Feline Club also handed out special awards in several other categories. In the adult cat division, the winner was Tommyland Louis Vuitton, a black tabby Maine Coon aged one year and ten months, belonging to Stefano Tomasoni. The title of most beautiful kitten went to a nine-month-old red tabby Maine Coon named Desmadinina Cat Abarth of Locatcoon, owned by Felicite Locatelli. In the neutered cat category, the honors went to Redcarpet Latin Lover, a nearly two-year-old Highland Straight โ another cat from Cristiana Capone’s Red Carpet Cattery.
The British Shorthair is one of the oldest and most recognized cat breeds in the world, believed to have descended from cats brought to Britain by the Romans. The breed is known for its dense, plush coat, round face, and calm, affectionate temperament, making it a popular choice for families and breeders alike. Blue is the most classic color associated with the breed, though it comes in a wide range of coat colors and patterns, including the golden shaded variety seen on Moon River. The breed was nearly wiped out after World War II, and breeders worked to restore it partly by crossing with Persian cats, which contributed to its distinctively round and plush appearance. Today, the British Shorthair consistently ranks among the most popular cat breeds in Europe and is widely shown at felinological competitions across the continent.
