Ever since word that the compact Ford Maverick was coming down the line, the excitement for truck owners had already been building. Filling a void in the compact truck space, the Ford Maverick delivers a base that is good-to-go as is or the perfect starting point for modifying the pickup to fit your needs and dreams.

In fact, SEMA reports that approximately 39% of truck owners will modify their truck. From air rides, paint, bumpers and sound systems to striping it down and creating something almost new, entire niche truck cultures and groups have sprung up over the experience with most taking to YouTube to learn and gather additional ideas. Probably due to the time afforded by isolation and the steady rise of the adventure-DIY segment, the timing for the Maverick couldn’t have been better. Even the team at Ford has gotten into the mix of helping modifiers get the ball rolling, you can see some of those YouTube videos here.
Meet Kenneth McCay’s Maverick
Maverick owner and modifier extraordinaire Kenneth McCay of Forney, Texas is inspiring others with his bold, graphic-emblazed Ford Maverick. His truck has been seen by millions online and shared through forums, podcasts and at auto shows. He is also the moderator of 2022 Ford Maverick Customs. We had the pleasure of chatting with Ken and just as smile-inducing as his modified truck, McCay was jovial and freely shared the story of his story.

Before he had even received his Maverick from the line, McKay knew he would modify the vehicle with the goal of showing it at SEMA. It makes him happy. It was also his first time ordering a truck and waiting for the it to be crafted for him. You can hear the joy in his voice as he talks about the process of shifting the base vehicle to what it has become.

It is a project taken on by him and few of his buddies from high school. They ‘tore apart the vehicle’, and he notes that the ‘price point and the compact size’ helped him make his choice in the Maverick. He enjoys the work and pays for it from his own pocket. He had seen a prototype at the auto show that accompanies the State Fair of Texas and the idea sparked. He immediately went out and ordered an air ride, that arrived 5 days before his truck was completed on the line. He notes that there’s really nothing out there, ‘other than lowering kits’, but as more and more Mavericks come out, people will offer more cool things for modifiers to enjoy.

McCay finds that the color matching bumper and bold 90s inspired graphic s are his favorite and most drastic mods. We also love that he still gets stopped at local Whataburger’s with the question, “What is it?”
