A Polish content creator known for dissecting food labels on TikTok recently came across packages labeled as homemade cakes in his local supermarket. He grabbed some soft chocolate varieties expecting something simple and comforting, much like what you might bake at home. When he turned the package over to read the ingredients, his reaction was one of pure shock captured on video right there in the aisle. The list went on and on, packed with far more items than anyone would use for a traditional family recipe.
What struck him most was how these products were marketed with the word homemade to draw in shoppers craving authentic flavors. In reality, the ingredient panels painted a very different picture, starting with sugar that accounted for up to one-third of the entire composition in some cases. Glucose syrup followed closely, along with inverted sugar syrup that boosts sweetness and helps maintain softness over time, plus regular sugar syrup for extra stability. These sweeteners alone transformed the cakes into heavily processed items far from any home kitchen setup.
The surprises continued with a range of industrial fats including palm oil, coconut oil, and various vegetable oils that often rank lower in nutritional value than butter or other natural choices. Then came the long parade of additives such as mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids, polyglycerol esters, xanthan gum, diphosphates, phosphates, carbonates, modified starches, and even animal gelatin in certain versions. Some similar supermarket cakes reportedly featured up to a hundred separate ingredients, turning what should be a straightforward treat into something resembling a chemistry experiment. While every single additive meets legal standards, the sheer number and combination in one small cake raised red flags for the TikToker.

He emphasized that a genuine homemade cake usually calls for just a few basics like flour, eggs, butter, and sugar, mixed with care and love. Supermarket versions prioritize long shelf life, consistent texture, and low production costs over simplicity and quality. The friendly homemade label taps into nostalgia, making shoppers feel they’re choosing something wholesome and familiar. In truth, it often hides industrial complexity that many people would prefer to avoid once they know the details.
This incident highlights a common issue in modern grocery shopping where appealing descriptions can mask what’s really inside. Plenty of us reach for these convenient options thinking they’re close to traditional baking, only to discover a lengthy list of unfamiliar components upon inspection. Taking a quick moment to read the fine print can make a big difference in understanding product quality and deciding what ends up in your cart. The TikToker’s straightforward takeaway encourages everyone to question marketing claims and opt for home preparation whenever possible to keep things truly simple and transparent.
