How can I attract more love, money, happiness OR All of the above in my life? Can Modern Vision Boarding really do that for me?
The simple answer to this question is YES! I am a believer in vision boards and yet I kick myself for not doing them more often. Every single time I have done a vision board, I have created an intention for myself that has created wonderful life lessons and has moved me closer to my life purpose. I am going to show you how to quickly create a process for modern vision boarding to accomplish three goals in your life. This is a single mom’s guide for modern vision boarding but it could also be called the busy mom’s guide to setting your intentions now. There is a key ingredient or secret sauce for an effective vision board. Do you want to know what that secret sauce is?
It’s You! You can’t do a vision board without you. You are the master creator of your life and the vision board is a guide for your intentions for the life you will achieve.
Nobody ever dreams of divorcing or breaking up. Working moms don’t fantasize about filing for bankruptcy and they don’t get excited about co-parenting with their children’s other parent. Fill in the blanks because there may be a very long list of things that frustrate you. They can frustrate you but they can’t sabotage you. The only way to sabotage your plans is if you choose to sabotage them yourself by perpetuating a negative attitude about your circumstances. Attitude and intention are an important part of the vision boarding process. What you focus on expands and that includes negative energy.
A few weeks ago, I met up with Elayna Fernandez of The Positive Mom and her daughters of the blog, Wholly Art for a chance to immerse ourselves in the making of a vision board. Elayna began her journey as a single mom in 2004 and her experience as a mompreneur is a testament and an inspiration for many of us. We met at Panera bread in Lake Worth and we got a chance to talk about our intentions for the year. I really had no idea what the process would be like but I am so glad I went. It was such an inspiring and therapeutic experience for me to be able to complete my vision board. Elayna provided her experience as a mentor and success guide and it was eye opening for me.
Her expertise really helped me create a framework for not just my vision board but it helped me to connect the dots on the vision for my life. She writes about the nitty gritty of vision boards and how “visualization is an important strategy to achieving your goals.” We met for about 4 hours in a space of communal peace and love – we set the intention and committed to the process and it just flowed after that. Now maybe you don’t have 4 to 6 hours to spend on your vision board and so this post will help you create what I like to call a “starter” vision board with intention statements and words to help you accomplish some of your goals, resolutions, intentions for this year. This exercise is really curated for the busy mom, the single mom, or the parent that feels they don’t have much time. Set your timer folks because you can get this done in 1.5 hours if you prepare in advance, I promise, and you will be happy that you did.
Creating your starter vision board is an exercise in Self-Care
I am going to help you accomplish three things: 1) Create a SMART vision board 2) Speak in present tense as if what you want to accomplish has already occurred and 3) Create three action steps towards each goal. Everything is a sequence of steps. If you are a veteran at vision boarding but strapped for time, this provides you the ability to focus and set your intentions so you can move on to accomplishing them. If you are new to vision boarding, this is an easy way to dip your toe into the exercise.
What you will need?
Magazines (or computer print outs of photos or words)
Paper to write your lists, ideas and intentions
Why SMART is so smart?
I am also going to talk about SMART goals – SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Bound. I use these at work all the time and it is beneficial to ensure that want you want to achieve as graphically displayed on your vision board can fit into the scope of SMART goals. Define a few SMART goals you want to accomplish this year. Learn more about SMART goals here!
I once had a vision board with a picture of a big house. I mean don’t we all want a nice, big fancy house of our dreams? I achieved it but didn’t anticipate what it COSTS to maintain such a big house. Financial pressures were part of the reason why I divorced, ended up losing the house, making so many bad financial decisions. In fact finances are the main reason why many couples divorce. It’s important to capture how you want to feel when you accomplish your goal. If I had to redo the image, I would not just add a photo of a big house, but also the words “financial freedom” to be able to afford the big house and when gluing words or pictures to your board, set the intention of how you want to feel when you get there – do you see where I am going with this?
Write it all down before you begin finding pictures and pasting them to your board. Here’s an example of a SMART goal for me:
I’d like to lose 50 pounds in one year
Specific – Lose Weight – What I am really worried about? – I don’t want to end up with Diabetes like my family members and I want to be active with my children in sports and activities. I explored my feelings about why this is so important. In my astrology lessons I talk about how to accomplish goals using astrology. It’s part of the reason why I scaled back on blogging so I could get back to basics and focus on my health.
How do we make this present tense? It brings me joy when I live healthier and run 5K’s with my daughter. Spending time with my family being active such as hikes, walks, runs and bike rides teaches them how to live healthier lives.
Measurable: to go from 197 to 140 by January 9, 2019
Achievable: I can accomplish this by burning 516 calories per day or limiting my calorie intake to 1600 calories per day
Relevant: The time is now since my last few checkups the doctor has told me I need to lose weight. Also I get frustrated not being able to join in with my daughter on runs.
Time bound: I have given myself one year. I signed up for HealthyWage and investing $30 a month. If I reach my goal I will earn $1,253.00. Literally I will make 3.5 times over my initial investment of $360. If you are on Healthywage or want to join with me, please visit them with my referral link: HealthyWage
Come up with three SMART goals for yourself. Are you trying to find love? Frame it in a way of how you want to feel when you find the partner that is right for you. Many times when looking for love we focus so much on the other person and how we believe THEY will make us happy. Turn that around to finding your happiness with your life FIRST and how that person adds to your happiness. If you aren’t happy you are just going to attract another unhappy person or turn them into something “unhappy.” I will write more on that in a later post.
The importance of speaking in present tense
I have this little exercise I do with my kids in order to motivate good behavior. I speak in third person about good behavior. So when a child of mine takes initiative and puts their towel away I not only praise the child but I also speak about the good behavior so the whole house can hear it. “Children that hang up their towels on their own are always prepared and ready to start their day.” This shifts our happiness and is a good reminder. The kids respond positively instead of us always yelling at them about the list of bad things they have done. In my example SMART goal above about losing weight, I keep my motivation by speaking in present tense. When my mind wants to convince me not to work out, I visualize me happily running and then tell myself, this work out makes me feel so much better about myself. I START and then if I feel I can’t continue my body will tell me so.
Present tense thinking and visualizing is very motivating. If you want to get out of your financial mess think about how good it is to have money in hand to buy something rather than taking out the credit card and increasing debt. Let’s say one of your goals is to go on vacation. Speak like you are already on vour dream vacation. Visualize it in your head and plan out the details in your head of how you will feel when you get there. Do you want to relax? Hang out with friends? Hook up on a vacation romance? Visit museums and learn a new culture? Begin your vacation at home by training your brain with meditation having your perfect vacation.
Three action steps
For each goal, create three action steps towards achieving that goal. These action steps can be something you want to accomplish today, in a month or in a year. You can come up with more goals but they should all center around achieving your three major milestones towards achieving one of the life goals on your vision board. Write down your three goals and come up with present tense verbs, phrases, emotions, actions and word mantras describing how you feel when you accomplish your goal. Go through magazines, the Internet, old photographs or books to find pictures and words that fit what you wrote down. Keep a copy of what you have written down so you can refer to it when you need to. Cut out what speaks to you and glue it to your vision board. Before I would open each magazine I would take a deep breath, meditate and repeat my intentions, and then express appreciation to whatever inspires you. Then once you open the magazine you will find what fits rather than waht is perfect. Your vision board is going to be a work in progress. You may not find everything you need with the materials you have – that is ok. If need be write in your mantras. As you venture through your life you will read passages or gather more ideas. These plant seeds and the more you continue to nurture your intentions and actions, the more you will achieve your goals. All of your intentions should be an exercise of generosity and joy, not of resentment.
Vision Board Posting
Once you are done, you can meditate over your board and display it prominently. I put mine up in a place that I can see it every day. In my bathroom. I look at it all the time because it is opposite my mirror so I see it every day. I took a photo of it and posted it to my Facebook Cover Photo. Or you can put it in your phone as a screensaver. I am in awe of my vision board because it is my life intentions and is a visual of my dreams, accomplishments and the beauty of me.
Now that you have what you need to create a starter vision board, show me yours. I typically will align mine with astrology and if you are interested in that, please feel free to email me at heatherbuen dallassinglemom.com. A major vision board will be created around April with the alignment of the sun in Aries and a new moon in Aries. You can activate yours at anytime. There is a solar eclipse happening at 27 degrees of Aquarius on February 15, 2018 – so this is another good time to create your vision boards and I will talk more on this topic in the astronewbies facebook group. If you want tips on creating a vision board with astrology, please join my Astronewbies Facebook Group.
