When you are a mother of boys, there are a lot of things that you need to prepare yourself for, especially if you are raising them by yourself. Boys really should come with a separate set of instructions because some of the things that you have to deal with are mind-boggling. However, we would not change our boys for anything in the world. If you have been blessed with a collection of son’s, here are some of the things you as a boy mom had better brace yourself for as they get older.
Love of cars
It will start when they are young. You will see them playing with toy cars and making engine noises with their mouths. They will sit and watch a certain Pixar movie on repeat. And finally, they will become teenagers who pass their driving tests and have a car to work on. Keep in mind, there will be nothing wrong with the car, they will just want to improve every part of it. We can guarantee that one day you will come home from work to discover some G body suspension kits or a set of alloy wheels on the dining table. Trust us, you will find a random car part somewhere in your house.
We don’t want to be rude but there is a certain smell that comes from teenage boys that is pretty gross. Sometimes it seems as though they smell no matter how much they shower or spray themselves. That is normal. When your boys hit puberty, they sweat more and their skin produces more oil. Sometimes it seems that they sweat and leak oil as soon as they set out of the shower. In time, their hormones will level out and they won’t smell as bad.
The birds and the bees…
As wonderful and charming as you think your son is, he probably has no idea how to talk to a girl. This is your chance to impart some wisdom as a woman and give them some advice that will carry them for the rest of their life. Some boys will not be happy to sit and discuss the birds and the bees with their mom, but tough. They need to know about this so they can make the right choices. Is it uncomfortable? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
They still like toys no matter how old they are
If there is one thing that we are confident about, it is that they will love playing with stuff for years to come. It doesn’t matter if it is building Lego models or refitting a car, boys love to play builder. They also love to be active so don’t be surprised that they spend their lives playing the same sports that you got them into when they were four years old. The games may mature and take on new roles in their lives, but you will see parallels as they get older and how they bring their interest with them.
So much food
I don’t think we are being over-dramatic when we say that you should brace yourself for a massive food bill every month. Even boys who are four years old and active have a habit of eating everything they see. Now, imagine that you have two or three boys who are around the teenage years. Yep, that food bill is going through the roof! Maybe it is the hormones or the growth spurts, but boys seem to eat a lot more than girls. Be sure to establish healthy eating habits at a young age so that they reach for the fruit and vegetables first before inhaling a 6 pack of donuts.
Clothes go quickly
As much as you would love to kit your kids out in the finest gear, you might want to hold off on buying them the latest designer wardrobe. Teenage boys have a habit of shooting up without any warning. One minute they are eating an entire week’s worth of shopping in one afternoon, the next day they have grown a foot taller and nothing fits them. It is every parent’s nightmare having to replace clothes for teenage boys because it is like Russian Roulette. The best thing you can do is stick with some cheaper options during their growth spurt years if you can. They may not like it but you can’t keep forking out a few hundred dollars for sneakers every month. Even as littles, they go through so many outfit changes in the day because of muck, so don’t worry about having to invest in a lot of cheap clothes for garden and outdoor play.
Fart jokes are everything
We say “fart jokes”, but what we mean is anything crude is funny to a boy. From fart jokes to sex jokes, as your boy gets older, they will find the strangest things funny. You will probably not understand half of their jokes so it is best not to get involved. However, you should make them aware that racist jokes and jokes about women are not cool. There is a chance that they have made jokes within these categories and not thought about how it can affect other people. If you hear them making these types of jokes, remind them that there are people who will be affected by these words. But fart jokes are still cool.
Get comfortable with the hospital
Boys have a wonderful habit of injuring themselves. From climbing on rooftops to managing to get their bikes to jump 20ft in the air, boys have no fear. You should take this time to invest in an excellent first aid kit and maybe some first aid classes. You might discover that you have become great friends with the staff in the local emergency department. The chance of becoming best friends with them increases massively when they take up sports. Trust us, if there is a way for your boy to break a bone on the pitch, he will find a way to do it.
