This Dog’s Wild Genetic Mix Has the Internet in Stitches

A quirky-looking dog named Tank has become an online favorite after his owner shared his story on Reddit in early January. One glance explains why people can’t stop talking about him. He looks like he borrowed the broad, serious face of a pit bull and paired it with a long, low body that feels more like a dachshund. The contrast is so unexpected that his photo quickly started making the rounds far beyond the original post.

Tank’s owner, Kendall Clark, a 40-year-old from Portland, Oregon, says his appearance comes down to a truly unusual family tree. Tank was born from what she described as an accidental litter. His mom is a pit bull, while his dad is a chiweenie, which is a mix of a miniature dachshund and a chihuahua. Put those genes together and you get a dog who looks like two different breeds agreed to share one body.

Clark admits she was not immediately sold on the idea of bringing a dog home. That hesitation didn’t last long once she met Tank. She says he stole their hearts quickly, starting out shy but determined to stay close and soak up affection. Before long, he became the kind of companion who shadows you from room to room just to make sure he doesn’t miss a cuddle.

Reddit users were instantly obsessed, and the post racked up more than 13,000 upvotes in a short time. The comments were filled with admiration, plus plenty of jokes about his proportions. Some people summed him up as a pit bull head on a “sausage dog” frame, and others said the look was so perfect it felt almost too funny to be real. A lot of viewers also compared him to Scrappy-Doo, the bold little character from the Scooby-Doo universe, and that nickname has followed Tank ever since.

I really underestimated how much I would love this little guy

Clark says the Scrappy-Doo remarks are constant, and while people sometimes laugh when they see him, it is usually in a kind way. Tank can seem intimidating at first, especially when he plants himself at a window and lets out a deep, pit bull-style bark. The moment he meets new people face to face, though, his bravery tends to disappear and he will often tuck himself behind Clark’s legs. Under that tough-looking face is a gentle, slightly insecure dog who mostly wants attention.

He is also remarkably committed to being the center of it. Clark says Tank will climb right into guests’ laps and stare until someone starts petting him. If that doesn’t work, he has been known to nudge a phone out of a hand with his nose as a not-so-subtle reminder to focus on him. Despite his unusual build, he loves romping with other dogs and seems to have no idea he is smaller than his attitude suggests.

Tank is currently healthy and playful, but Clark says a veterinarian warned that his proportions could raise his risk of arthritis later in life. Because of that, she and her partner try to keep him active to support his muscles and joints. It is a practical plan for a dog who already seems determined to live like he is twice his size. If you’ve ever seen a pet with a surprising mix of looks and personality, share your story in the comments.
