When Alysia’s story came across my inbox, I couldn’t help but smile. Inspirational, relevant and timely, Alysia Montaño is a modern mom that is fighting for the rights, equal pay and honor of others and reminding me that while one door closes another opens.
Olympian and ‘that pregnant runner,’ Alysia Montaño has found a new sponsor in Kiwi owned activewear brand, Cadenshae. The New Zealand company sought out the 7 time US 800m champion after learning of her public and controversial contract-severing battle in 2013 and 2016 with former sponsors, NIKE and Asics, citing inadequate and unfair maternity coverage during and after her two pregnancies to daughter Linnea and son Aster, now five and two respectively. This ground-breaking contract comes now as Montaño is 33 and five months pregnant with her third child.
In the May 2019 viral op-ed video for The New York Times May, Montaño said, “The sports industry allows for men to have a full career. When a woman decides to have a baby, it pushes women out at their prime.” She went further to say, “Stop treating our pregnancies like injuries.”
Seeing the synergy between their brand and hers, Cadenshae, an activewear brand for nursing mothers, reached out to get to Montaño, hoping to strike up a deal. Cadenshae Founder, Nikki Clarke says Montaño’s fearlessness in speaking out about maternity pay is inspiring stating “I’m captivated … and have followed Alysia’s story since the get go. After our first meeting, I wanted nothing more than to support her on her quest…not only as a female professional athlete, but as a spokeswoman for maternity rights throughout the US and globally.”
While Cadenshae is excited to see what the future holds, Montaño notes that the nature of female contracts in the realm of sports management and athletics is not nearly where it needs to be. Though her five-year fight, partnered with the fights of other female athletes has seen some verbiage change which is a step in the right direction.
Montaño is hopeful and delighted by the change of events and the support of a sponsor that respects her desire to more than just an athlete and advocate… to be mom too. “Cadenshae’s sponsorship finally allows me to focus on being a mother, and not be penalized for it, this is the way it should be for all women… The Time is Now.”
