If you’re planning to move to Dallas and you have children, the neighborhood you choose is going to factor significantly in your quality of life. For example, Dallas traffic is notorious for being unbearable, and Texas roadways can be dangerous in general. You want to choose a neighborhood that’s close to the amenities you need, so you aren’t trying to make your way across the city. If you don’t choose a neighborhood that’s the right fit for you, you can very easily end up feeling trapped thanks to the traffic.
You also want a neighborhood that’s lively, has good schools, and tends to cater to the needs of families with kids. With that in mind, the following are some of the best Dallas neighborhoods for families.
If you can afford it, Preston Hollow is ranked as one of the best neighborhoods in Dallas, but it comes with a luxury price tag. Preston Hollow is near the North Dallas Tollway, and it’s home to some of the most well-known private schools in Dallas, like Ursuline Academy of Dallas. A lot of the beautiful homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1920s and 30s, and the mansions along Strait Lane and Inwood Road are especially well-known. There are mature trees and lots of established greenery in Preston Hollow. Preston Hollow is around 15 minutes from Downtown Dallas and Dallas Love Field Airport, so it’s convenient.
Lake Highlands is close to White Rock Lake, and it’s in northeast Dallas. It’s a great family-friendly option, and it’s also good for young families. There are hundreds of acres of trails and parks, and the median home value is much lower than in Preston Hollow. Most of the homes are single-story ranchers.
You might not think of Uptown as good for a family, but thanks to how pedestrian-friendly it is and the outdoor parks, it can actually be a very good option. Uptown is north of Downtown Dallas, and there are a lot of restaurants and shops nearby too.
You have direct access to the Katy Trail, but if you want a single-family home, then Uptown might not be the best option for you since most of the properties and townhouses and condos. The upside is that you could save a lot of time on your commute living in this neighborhood.
Preston Highlands is often named as the best neighborhood to call home in all of Dallas. The median home value is lower than a lot of other Dallas neighborhoods, so you can find affordable options. It ranks as not only one of the best neighborhoods to raise a family in Dallas but also the best to buy a house in the city. It’s a safe community, and the public schools are top-rated, including Plano West Senior High School and Rose Haggar Elementary School.
Lakewood is located west of White Rock Lake, about 30 minutes from Downtown Dallas and Deep Ellum. It’s primarily residential, but there are still shopping and recreation options. The homes include a number of single-family four-bedroom properties. There are also affordable Craftsman houses, and condos. Lakewood Elementary School is very well-rated, and the median home price is under $184,000.
You can visit the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, which is nearby, or go to the Roy Meyer’s Children’s Adventure Garden. You can also take advantage of the proximity to White Rock Lake.
Richardson is a Dallas suburb that’s often called the Telecom Corridor because it’s home to companies like Verizon Business and Nortel. It’s also where the University of Texas at Dallas is located. You can use the DART light rail system to get to Downtown Dallas in just 20 minutes.
Schools in the area include Prairie Creek Elementary and Richardson West Arts and Technology Magnet.
University Park is a high-end neighborhood close to Highland Park. It’s north of Downtown Dallas, and it’s home to Southern Methodist University, which is where it gets its name. Top-rated University Park Schools include Hyer Elementary and Highland Park Middle. You can visit the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Highland Park or fish at the pond in Caruth Park. The area is also home to the Holmes Aquatic Center and a number of family-friendly restaurants.
Dallas is a great city for families with some wonderful neighborhoods for all budgets and interests.
