Madison Austin and her husband were searching for a small dog that would fit perfectly into their apartment lifestyle in New York when they first spotted Henry online in April 2020. It was right at the beginning of the pandemic and they wanted something easy to manage in a smaller space. The shelter listed him as a male chihuahua weighing about four and a half pounds which seemed ideal for their needs. From the moment they brought him home however they noticed his unusually large paws and began to wonder if something was off.
As the weeks passed Henry kept growing at a surprising rate. Austin recalled how they still hoped he might be part chihuahua mix and even debated whether his ears would eventually stand up. Instead he started gaining between two and three pounds every single week which quickly added up. Their veterinarian eventually delivered the news that this pup was definitely not a chihuahua at all. The couple had already invested in an expensive electronic potty pad thinking it would work for a tiny dog but that plan did not go as expected and their food budget grew much larger than anticipated.
The family later moved to a bigger home and welcomed two young daughters which turned out to be a wonderful match for their ever-expanding pet. What started as a shelter puppy advertised at around four and a half pounds has now reached a solid 95 pounds. Over time it became clear that Henry is a full Labrador retriever with all the energy and affection that breed is known for. Austin admits they originally pictured a lap-sized companion for city living but life had other plans in store for them.
Henry has brought endless joy to the household with his love for treats hiking sessions and plenty of cuddles. He entertains everyone with an impressive collection of tricks and loves playing with his two little human sisters. The dog that once seemed mismatched for their apartment has proven to have a heart of gold and fits seamlessly into family adventures. Austin often shares updates about his daily life on her Instagram account where followers get to see just how much personality this big boy has.
Looking back the couple feels grateful for the unexpected twist that brought Henry into their lives. They thought a small dog suited their situation best yet ending up with a large playful Labrador has made their home even happier. Adopting from a shelter opened the door to a surprise that strengthened their family bond in ways they never imagined. Henry reminds them daily that the best companions sometimes arrive in unexpected packages and prove to be exactly what was needed all along.
